Is there any important differences between various matchbox models (4, 6, 7 etc)?
Im thinking of buying some kind of used buffer amp but i don't know what to look for.

I don't know anything about the 4, but the only difference between models 6 & 7 is that the model 7 has a little switch on it that turns the unit off. On the model 6, you have to pull the output plug to turn it off and save on the battery. I have the model 6 and installed a switch I bought from Radio Shack.
No big deal.

The differences between an earlier matchbox like the MB 6 and the MB 7a are more than just an external on/off switch.
MB 7A can achieve a gain greater than unity.
MB 7A sounds way better due to the improved circuitry.
MB 7A uses an op amp.
MB 7A doesn't have that slightly "compressed" sound typical of most impedance-matching devices and pedals.
Check with Goodrich for a technical explanation of the differences.
