Steel Guitar/Amp Combinations

Post by Jody Cameron »

If this has been covered before, I apologize for bringing it up, but I think certain types of steels sound better through certain types of amps.

Case-in-Point; my Sho-Bud seems to really sparkle through my Evans amp, and my Emmons p/p seems to really shine good through either my Peavey N400 or 1000. It sounds good through the Evans too, but not AS good, and I have to tweak the settings on the amps when I change steels.

Perhaps certain tonal characteristics of certain guitars and amps are matched better?
I guess we are all shooting for the optimum. Image

You are absolutely correct, Jody. As an example, my Williams sounds great through my Webb, but is sort of lifeless in my Mesa/Boogie rack. My Sierra sounds much better through the rack than it does in the Webb.

I used to have an Aims amp that was a perfect match for my Stringmaster. I've never quite captured that sound since.

Hey b0b,

What is an Aims amp? I've never heard of that one before. Do you know any history on it? Sounds interesting.

Also, I used to have a Zum that sounded great through a Mesa Boogie head. I would like to try my Emmons and/or Sho-Bud through a Boogie, but I don't have access to one at the moment.

Hey Jody,
I used to have an Aims amp too. They were made in Santa Ana. The company went on to become Randall Amps. I used to know one of the engineers named Gary Sunda who had a lot of good ideas. My Aims amp was a twin 12 all tube model and sounded better than any Fender Twin I'd ever heard However, I had a lot of trouble with it and finally I traded it in for a Randall Commander II. The Randall was a solid state unit which sounded like a tube amp. It was set up just like a twin with the throw a way channel with only the volume, treble, and bass knobs. I took it to Gary and he wired the reverb and tremolo into that channel too. He used to do that to Fender amps for people. Have a good 'un. JH

My 1972 Emmons p/p sounded weak w/the Session 400x15". Once I tied it in with my LA-400x12" it really came to life, full bodied and lots of sparkle IMHO. Wouldn't change it for anything.
My prewar Ricks sound fabulous in that old Harmony 8" speaker...circa 1940.

...I would like my p/p thru a bullhorn...

..it sounds really good through my rack rig with Evans preamp, Stewart power amp and 2 Peavy 12" cabs..but it sounds awesome through my Fender Vibrosonic...I've heard it with either a JBL or EVM, both are fantastic..I've got the 15" EVM in mine..

...the Vibrosonic sounds especially awesome on the C-6 neck, the rack rig doesn't even come close on the bottom neck..

..I didn't just stumble upon this combination..my musical mentor has already done the legwork and tried every about every combination there is over the years...he uses this one, and it is a winner by my ears...of course, as b0b says, your mileage may vary...
[This message was edited by Pat Burns on 06 September 2003 at 08:00 PM.]

The Aims amp I used said "Phoenix, Arizona" on it. It was a huge, closed box with four 10" speakers that the former owner had destroyed. I put a 15" JBL in it (a D-130, I think), and ported it according to JBL specs to conteract the speaker's resonant frequency.

It had four 6550 output tubes that put out about 100 watts RMS. It sort of honked if you played it too loud, but at normal volumes it sounded great, especially with the Stringmaster.

There were a fair number of Aims amps in Phoenix when I lived there in the mid 70s. Everyone I knew who had one got rid of it only to wish they had never let it go.

I don't recall any steel players playing them, though.
[This message was edited by Chris Bauer on 07 September 2003 at 10:03 AM.]

I've been running my 72 P/P stereo from the volume pedal through my Nashville 1000 and a Fender Cyber-twin. I've been alternating the cybertwin settings between the "Twin" and "vibrolux" settings and really happy with the result. The combination of the 15" Black Widow and the 2 12's in the Twin really compliment each other.

Jody,
I love my old sho-bud (1973 Professional D-10)and for me it sounds great through a 1965 Ampeg Jet. I have tried the fenders but they just do not cut it, its not my sound. I also love the sound that my leslie 122 speaker puts out too, that real deep rooted sound.
I do think it has something to do with personal taste and what sound you hear, or like to hear. I just love the throaty, earthy sound others may not. Here's a statement for you "There is nothing like a tube amps."

'54 Fender Dual 8 Pro through '56 tweed Princeton- really sweet!

Carter D10 w/ TrueTones through Nashville 1000- fat and warm. Also sounds great through '69 Vibrolux Reverb and '69 Deluxe Reverb...
[This message was edited by John McGann on 11 September 2003 at 05:46 PM.]

Sho-Bud 6140 through a Gibson BR-6 (Type I), my favorite "chamber amp." Mighty mellow. For contrast, Fender 2000 through a SF Twin Reverb(or, for chamber playing, a Danelectro Dirty Thirty). What high frequency hearing loss?

i've got my ShoBud Professional plugged in
Hilton VP then
Out 1 into a Nashville 1000 w: just a little reverb
and Out 2 into my PV PA w: and MPX1
i mix both together w: a predominance for the clear sound of the Nash
Hey Micheal L, those 2 Amps must sound GREAT
[This message was edited by CrowBear Schmitt on 11 September 2003 at 11:08 PM.]

[This message was edited by CrowBear Schmitt on 11 September 2003 at 11:08 PM.]

I must be going nuts...

I wonder if our ears somehow change from day-to-day and place-to-place also?

I stated in my original post that my Emmons did not sound as good through my Evans as it does through my Peavey's, but last week I took my PV 1000 and replaced the Evans at my regular gig, after having done an outdoor show with a different group at a different place with the PV. This time, I went BACK to the Evans because it just seemed like I could not get my sound dialed in through the PV!! All this using the same guitar - my Emmons.

Perhaps I'm used to the sound in that particular room with that particular amp/guitar, however I do use the Sho-Bud there, too with the Evans. This fickle, ever-changing sound business is disconcerting to say the least...Am I crazy, or has anyone else experienced anything similiar?

From 1973 to 1982 I worked part time as a DJ in a nightclub spinnin tunes on weekends. Had about 1200 watts of Crown amps with a bi-amped system feeding Altec Exponential Horns and 15" Woofers. Most weekends the system sounded crisp and clean, some other times it sounded muddy and blah...
(yes on the same disco tunes too...)
The only thing I could correlate the blahs to was possibly humidity or barometric pressure affecting the Altec speakers. nevr did figure it out.
