Ernie Ball VS Goodrich?

Post by Niklas Widen »

I guess this has been discussed before, but I'm about to buy my first volume pedal and I can choose between the Ernie Ball and the Goodrich 120. I've read a lot about the Hilton pedal, but since they're a bit out of my price range and virtually impossible to get hold of where I live (importing to Sweden would surely double the price), I'd like to know what you think about the other two. Should I go for a Goodrich or an Ernie Ball? I can add that I can get them for almost exactly the same price.

2 words for you... GOOD RICH Image
Seriously, though, I know a few guys who use the Ernie Ball, however, the size and position is more optimized for 'standing up' 6 string players, vs, sitting down at the pedal steel. Some may disagree, but that's how I see it.

Secondly, the Ernie Ball uses a 250k pot, not exactly optimum for the pedal steel, where most folks like a 500k pot. (or some type of match/buffer circuitry). The goodrich will more likely have a higher resale value if you decide to sell down the road as well.

This is a definite no-brainer... Goodrich is the choice. There's simply no comparison whatsoever.

If you are mainly playing steel with it, use the Goodrich over the Ernie Ball. As previously stated, the angle of the EB is more optimal for standing up. The L-120 Goodrich has a much more comfortable angle for sitting at a steel.

Another important thing to consider is that Goodrich jacks are on the side of the pedal while newer EB's are in the front. This is nice for a guitar players pedalboard, but you may run into problems getting the pedal close enough to your steel's pedal bar. The jacks in front could cause discomfort in not allowing the pedal to go far enough forward to be comfortable.

Thanks, Michael T.

I would also advise getting the bracket for the Goodrich to attach it to your pedal board. It will hold it in place. Mine wanted to slide ahead and get hung up once in a while.
