Dual coil PUs

Post by Reggie Duncan »

In 1979, I ordered my Emmons PP with dual coil pickups. I have a toggle switch to go from single to dual, with tone control. Anyone else have this configuration? Do you use single or dual? I know the single is brighter. How does this work?

Reggie,
It's all up to you...If you are recording and the tone you have with the dual coils isn't brite enough, or you want a briter tone, you go with the single coil..The single coil on it's own can introduce some noise so guitar and amp placement need to be set up to get the lowest noise possible...It's a matter of preference..Some people like single coil tone, and some like the lack of noise and dual coil tone..Your steel gives you the choice..Jim

I have always preferred the dual coil tone with maybe a brighter sound from the amp.

Are we talking about split coil pickups with a tap for part of the coil or all of it, ala the older Sho-Buds, or are we talking about humbucking pickups? I've seen split coil pickups on Emmons, but not a tap switch on a humbucker. Also tapped pickups still have the noise problem that humbuckers do not. Image

I don't know the difference. I ordered "Dual Coil Pickups" on mine with a toggle and tone switch. One side is single, one side is dual.

I'm not an expert on this, but I'd say you have "regular" split coil pickups, not humbuckers.
