b0b, an idea to help the forum?

Post by Michael T. Hermsmeyer »

Hey b0b, not that the forum needs help, but I was thinking:
It seems that the steel guitar forum has many many members who share advice on a regular basis. They help each other with problems, tones, repairs, electronics, parts and more. Have you ever thought of collecting together some of these ideas and creating a book of the knowledge that the members have shared. It could be a series of topics something like the repair articles that Dan Erlewine of Stewart-MacDonald has put into book form of all the years that he wrote a repair column for Guitar Player Magazine. The books could even be published as a parallel format to the forum itself. Such as "The Steel Guitar Forum Guide To Steel Guitar Manufacturers", "The Steel Guitar Forum Guide To Electronics", "The Complete Unabridged History Of The Steel Guitar, published by The Steel Guitar Forum", "The Big Book Of Steel Guitar Licks", "Buddy Emmons, This Is Your Life, Published by the Steel Guitar Forum Press", you get the idea.

I don't know what it would involve, but it seems like with such a collection of expertise, past and present, it would be a potential money maker for the forum, not to mention an everlasting historical archive. Then you could take us all on a cruise, LOL.
You could post an idea, situation or problem, and ask everyone to post their opinions, answers or experiences. Much like Winnie Winstons book "Pedal Steel Guitar" where he explains the different manufacturing processes and adjustment hints based on his experiences, you have an "infinity" of knowledge and experience right here on the forum at your disposal.
I would like to know your thoughts on this idea. You never know, it could grow into something HUGE!!!

"The Steel Guitar Forum Proudly Presents!!"
"The Fender Years"
"Starring Mr. Steel Guitar Himself":
Jody Carver!!!"

It could be an annual Yearbook:

The Best of The Steel Guitar Forum, 2002

With content for each chapter selected by the various moderators, e.g.:

Events & Announcements: most notable events/announcements of the past year

Extended Family: significant arrivals and departures, or recipes for Texas barbeque ( Image)

Buy & Sell: most incredible deals passing thru the Forum's hands this year

etc. etc.

Would be fun!

We've discussed extracting information on those topics that come up over and over (tuning, maintenance, cabinet drop, universal vs multiple tunings, etc.) and I think the conclusion was that anyone is welcome to do it, but the time required to condense it down is SUBSTANTIAL. I do well to have time to read and contribute my own meager bit with the spare time I have -- perhaps someone has more time on their hands and is willing to help, but it's a never ending battle to keep up once you've abstracted what's already there. I took a look at the archives on a couple of topics that interest me and decided that it's too time consuming for me and b0b mentioned that he doesn't have time either and it would be a major additional commitment for the moderators to perform this function.

Volunteers???

I print everything I find on the forum that helps me get it together. I have one note book for Tab,Tunings and such, and I have one for building steels, electronics and gear evaluations. This is the best music resource tool I have ever run across. I am constantly getting amazed at the collective wealth of knowledge that comes thru this way. I just wish my girl friend didn't get so jealous, Ha Ha! Merry Xmas everyone!! <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jesse Pearson on 22 December 2002 at 09:58 AM.]</p></FONT>

Like so many things, I just don't have the time! If someone else does, email me and maybe we can work something out.
