Which small Peavey?

Post by Chris Brooks »

Help me in my search for a Peavey to play small gigs with. I am going for a single 12 inch speaker in interests of weight. (Possible bumper sticker: "My other amp is a Session 500.")

Local Daddy's has a bunch of Bandits and Specials. What would you recommend for steel and jazz-style guitar?

1 "older" Bandit? (would this have a BW?)
2 Bandit with Sheffield speaker?
(Some Bandits were 65 watts, others are 80 watts, right?)
3 Bandit with Scorpion?
4 Special with 1 x 12"?
5 Studio Pro with 1 x 12"?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I have an LA400 with a 12" Black Widow that sounds really good with steel and guitar. It has the same output as a Nashville 400 but is a little smaller. It is probably about the same weight though.

Daddy's Music has a store in the UAE?

I have an older Bandit 75 with a Scorpion speaker. I like the sound very much, it's clear, loud and sounds good. I guess this one dates from the earlier 90's. It also works well using the Profex II into the power amp "in" jack.

I had a post on here a few months ago asking about the history of the Bandit and the various models. Mike Brown was kind enough to reply and chart out the history of the model.

Do a search for it and enjoy.

Thanks for your replies, guys. Any thoughts on Studio Pro 112? Found one cheap. Reverb tak looks pretty short though ...

Darvin, I am now back in the US, so I am shopping at Daddy's in Rhode Island! Just changed my profile . . .

Chris, if you're in a position to do some hands on A/B comparisions, it seems to be a good way to go IMO.

I recently had such a session in which my final choice was so different from what I thought I wanted that it really got my attention.

I did it. Bought a well-used Bandit 65 at a local shop. Price was right--$ 140--so if it is not my cup of tea, I am not out much.

Bill, I think it does indeed have the Scorpion speaker: 3 bolts, but no identifying logo. I'll check the serial number later to see what it is.

Sitting next to my Session 500, the Bandit looks like a practice amp; but I know they are plenty loud!

Cheers, guys.
