Hi Mike,

Tim Harr here...

What is the CURRENT Software version for the TTFex?

I have an older unit with v1.4...I think it was current in like 1997 or 1998...

How can I go about obtaining the most current software load for the TT Fex?

will the upgrade make the compresser less choppy, Ken I got my Svetlana tubes and ordered a 15" for the twin, gonna be a different amp, thanks for bias info

Ken is correct, but the 1.5 version is still available at no charge if you send the unit to us here at the factory. There is additional charges for the 2.0 version because of the additional enhancements. Jim, I have version 2.0 in a Tubefex. The biggest improvement to me was the tuner is way more stable. The mix ratios for wet to dry are different, see the above mentioned website for full details on the changes.

The compressor seems the same to me. You have to work at it a little. Be sure you have enough input gain on the global settings. For a more compressed sound, edit the "level" in the compressor edit field. Oddly enough, the lower the setting the more compressed it sounds! Around 13% to 15% sounds good on my Tele! Use a bit of noise gate as well. One problen with a compressor (any compressor) is that is wants to see a constant input level or it wil be trying to make adjustments on the level. In other words, you can not run a volume pedal into the front of the Fex units and expect to use the compressor! You are better off with a 3 cord setup or an outboard compressor that is inline after the pickup and before the volume pedal.
One of the problems that you will have if you run the Fex into the front end of the amp and use a 3 wire setup is the loss of a "tail" on your sound after the pedal is pulled back! Try using a little of the amps reverb on at all times and the tail will be there. I do not care to much for the Fex straight into the power amp input of my Nashville 400, just me I guess (frustrated guitar player, trying to play steel!!!)

Jeff Peterson has some excellent Tubefex settings (will download to a Transtubefex just fine, the "System Exclusive" messages are accepted by both units, they seem to have the same I.D.) that are available on the site mentioned above. A little more aggressive and modern sounding for the dobro and steel. I am an old fashioned guy, I like the Newman settings for steel and Jeff's setting are my "cup of tea" on the Tele! I am going to mix and match a custom set of both settings for my Tubefex.
