question for older 60's steel players

trying to find out what name brand speaker's were in the Standel 2-12 custom amp?
this amp was used in the mid to late 60's buy many pro steel players.
trying to restore one to original condition.

In the early 60's I had a Standel piggy-back tube amp with a ported enclosure. It had one 12" D-120 JBL in it. Wish I still had it. It sure sounded good with that Fender 1000.

You may want to give Tim Maag or Magg a call. He is in Fullerton, California and he works on a lot of Standels. His number is 714 447-8364.
Tim may still have a pair of original speakers that I asked him to please remove from my 1969 Standel Twin Twelve (with contour.) He gave me a pair of Altec's which I much prefered.

I believe most of them (all the one's I saw, anyway) came with "D"-series JBL's. At the time, that was simply the best speaker available.

I bought a piggy back amp from Irby Mandrell in '61 that had two JBL 12s. Sold that and bought an Imperial XV with two JBL 15s. To my knowlege, Bob Crooks used only JBLs in those years.

They were probably JBL D-131s. They are really good speakers, but I think Altec 417s are better.

My Standel Customs in 70 and 71 had Altec Lansings. Went thru a lot heads in that model though.!!!

It could have been any of the above mentioned speaker brands. Standel offered their models with different speaker options already in -58. You could choose between the JBL's,which were stock, or Jensens. In the 60's they sometimes used Altecs and also had Standel brand speakers, though I don't know which company manufactured those. Throughout the company's history, JBL's were the most widely used speaker brand.

Jussi, Standel used Utah / Oxford to make the Standel brand.

Jussi is correct. In 1956 I was working a dance hall in Baldwin Park, CA and we had Eddie Dean regularly as a guest. He wasn't a great guitar man but he was sporting one of the new Standels similar to the ones Hank Thompsons guys were using. It used two of the old 807 tubes for power out and they were pushing JBL's. That amp was harsh and bright but it had the most powerful sound I had heard up to that time.
