Andy,
My setup is a follows:
1985 Emmons D10 P/P (or My Carter S-10DB) to a Hilton Pedal and then the Rv3:
- (A output), Evans FET 500 Custom LV.
- (B output), to either My Webb 6-14E or a Nashville 400 Modified (depending on where I am playing).
This topic has been discussed a few times before and you could try a search on RV3 to pull up the old comments.
I always keep the RV3 as the last in the chain (closest to the amp). If you also use a pedal such as a BOSS DD3, I would put it between your guitar output and your Volume pedal.

I've tried the rv-3 and didn't care for it. Sounds like I didn't have in in the right place. What or where would you run your profex 11 ? I'll try the rv-3 the other way and see if it is better. Mt problem is that if I get the reverb that I want then it muddy's it all up to the the point that everything runs together. I play with more reverb than the average guy I guess. I'm new (2 yrs) on steel and am trying to find the sound that I hear others getting and I'm damn sure not there yet. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Jeff,
I'm fairly new, too. I've temporarily settled on less reverb and more delay.
I, too, am not overly fond of the digital reverb sound of the RV-3. I liked it at first but once I heard it next to a Lexicon reverb, and the reverb on the new Evans amps, it sounded unnatural.
So, for now, I'm using my DD-3 delay pedal
with a very short delay time and about 4 repeats, and just a little amp reverb.
Good luck on your quest. It's fun to experiment.

I like Delay before the volume pedal and Reverb after the volume pedal.
If your band does songs where there is a momentaty dead stop, or a dead stop ending, you can stop the delay repeats with the volume pedal, and the 'verb tail is usually innocuos enough that it doesn't get in the way of the absence of notes being played.
But when only using one RV3 unit, I run it after the V-ped and just use a reverb only setting when nearing the dead stop sections.
I keep it in easy arms reach of the knobs.

Tony:
I have never heard of using 4 beats in a delay. I can't imagine it sounding right, but if it works for you, then thats whats important. Everybody I know uses a single beat and a short delay. I pretty much follow the way Paul Franklin has it on his teaching tape on effects. You said you were fairly new and I just thought you might be off base here and I would suggest you try a single beat. Just trying to help, or sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong, depending on your point of view. Good luck steeling.
By the way, I use a DD-3 and here are my settings: Level- 11 o'clock
Feed Back - Min (off)
Delay Time - 11 o'clock
Mode - 800 ms.
[This message was edited by George Kimery on 01 August 2002 at 08:28 PM.]

George,
I'm always interested in another opinion, especially from those who are more experienced. I must have described my delay settings incorrectly. Let me try again.
I set mine for 4 "repeats" with the last one barely audible. Then, using a shorter delay time, it adds depth to the reverb effect from the amp. I only set my amp reverb on "3".
I understand that a lot of steelers will set a longer delay time for the slower songs.
I'm not one to fiddle with my delay time setting during my gigs (as I usually forget to do it), so I set it as above and boogie.
I realize that this is not the conventional method, but it works for my band which is very rockabilly.
I hope I haven't confused Jeff. I'm always experimenting so, months from now, I might find another setting that is just as interesting. Thanks for the feedback, George.

If you're using a non-powered (pot) pedal, I'd put the effect between the steel and the pedal. This way, the effect always "sees" the same input signal, and it gives a more consistent sound throughout the volume range. With a powered pedal, it makes less difference how you hook it up, but you have to be careful not to "overload" the effect's input level. Most powered pedals can deliver many times the signal that comes out of the average pickup.

Does your Evans have an effects loop? You may get better results by using the loop, although you may have to lower the input level to accomodate the line level signal of the loop. Many rack mount processors feature an input level selector so you can run in the loop or switch it to instrument level if you want to plug the guitar in. My Rocktron Intellifex has this feature and I always run it in the loop for dead quiet operation.

I play thru a Boss RV-3 also. I'm new to it,
but so far I like it. It has infinite variables. I'm playing thru an older Vegas 400. After reading other posts on 'sequencing'/ 'patching' and what comes first etc., I've got it hooked up like this:
Steel to RV-3 to amp [input]. Then vol pedal
[instru] to 'out' [amp] to 'in' on the Post EQ Patch on the front of the Peavey (not thru the effects loops on back of amp).
This hookup is also extremely quiet.
I got these ideas from previous posts by Mike Brown and Jim Smith and others as well. Try a 'search' in this section.

Years ago when Paul Franklin was using two PEAVEY-Nashville 400's he had his amps set as follows: Pre-Gain 5,Low 0,Mid approx: -7 1/2db,Shift 800Hz,High +3,Pres. +3, and DLY 200ms w/no repeats, and he told me he just added the slightest amount of Chorus that was just barely audible!(Amps reverb on 5, and Master Gains on 10[full on]) I know he's not using anything that resembles that now, but;if you have the equipment to do this, it worked for him very well! One other thing to mention, he always went directly to one amp from the vol. pedal dry,and the other out put from the vol.pedal to the chorus effect, and then out of it to the second amp.Paul used a stereo vol. pedal, but; you can still hook up with a vol. pedal that has (2) output jacks. For myself nowadays, I use two PEAVEY Nashville 1000's, and I go directly from my Goodrich L-120 Vol. pedal to the front of each amp. Then I use the rear patch loops on each amp for my effects. I don't use reverb on my amps at all.I use an Alesis QuadraVerb, and I make use of both Quad Inputs and Outputs. This way you can blend both of your pre-amps to have two distinct amp sounds, and you can still have delay only in one amp and your other amp dry except of course for reverb! This works great for me,with my Franklin D-10(9 &
w/L7-10 pickups.Hope I didn't confuse you! "Big John" Bechtel
[This message was edited by John Bechtel on 03 August 2002 at 04:42 PM.]

Well John,
I'm very confused. To me reverb, and I suppose all those other EFFECTS should be used very judicially.
Just cause you can crank the heck out of any given "box"-------well??????????????????----------------why would you want to??????????????????? All these sound enhancemments----have to be tempered. They are very sophisticated. Not to be taken lightly.

Andy&Joe;When I use my RV-3 I put it after the vol. pedal with (A) output to amp. #1, and (B) output to amp. #2. As Joe said the Bal. just barely on. Then my Feedback at 9:00, my Dly. Time at 1:30, and my Mode is #7 (Plate Rev.+ Dly) To be honest, the reason I seldom use my RV-3 is because of he Balence control. The Rev. just seems to be too strong in relation to the Dly vol! It needs to be fine tuned too much! Sorry, but that's only my opinion! "Big John"

I just called Mike Brown about the correct way to hook up the RV-3. I play a LeGrande III with Hilton pedal and NV-1000. He told me to go from the guitar to the Hilton "input" then out to the "high gain on the front of the NV-1000. I put the RV-3 on top of the amp. Then with two short cables I go from the "post EQ patch" "SEND" ( on front of amp) to the "IN" on the RV-3 with one cable. Then with the other short cable I go from "OUT" on the RV-3 to "RETURN" on the "post EQ patch. This works great for me and I can turn it on and off with the remote switch from the amp. Hope this helps . Martin.
