Bucky Baxter / REM World Leader Pretend

Post by Nico Hillary »

Hi all,

I've been driving myself crazy trying to work out Bucky Baxter's pedal steel intro and bridge from World Leader Pretend by REM.
It's the first thing I ever heard that made me want to play steel (and it only took me 30 years to get round to it  ). It's either deceptively simple or fiendishly hard but I can't quite figure it out.

As always, thanks in advance for your wisdom!

I’m also an R.E.M. fan (for 35 years!) and recently have been learning E9 PSG. I’m embarrassed to say that I never specifically noticed the PSG parts in that song, but now (even just thinking about it without actually listening) I can totally hear it and look forward to also learning those parts. Hopefully others will chime in here with some insight on how to play them.

Hi Sean,

Oh heck, you're right - 35 years !

It's a really tasteful solo. I'm much more into that style than the busy speed-picking stuff (don't get me wrong, I like that too). I can hear it, but I just can't quite get my head around it.

I saw a really nice solo by Mike Johnson on YouTube the other day. Very similar style. I'll see if I can post...
