Gun case for steel guitar? Why not!
I recently bought that Sonny Jenkins 10-string I'd been looking at... almost got it free! But it needed a case. I'm looking at gun cases and found one for fairly cheap, 50$:

I did not realize that one feature of the case was the 'crush-proof' pillar in the middle that would get in the way... so imagine my surprise when it arrived. Luckily I own a tool that will wooly-booger just about anything, a Multi-Tool. Treat this thing with respect!
Anyway it made short work of the pillars, now just left with holes:
That's what gaffer tape is for, I expect, so that's what I did. I'll probably tape it from the inside too, might even glue something there. Now, WalMart thinks I want gun stuff!

I have found that shotgun cases are perfect for most lap steels.

I have several NC Star rifle bags that work perfectly with my postwar Gibson lap steels.

Yup, rifle cases, especially ones made for carbines are really great cases for steel.
I bought a PLANO case, and it has pick 'n pluck foam. $110. Take my money! Way cheaper, and better quality than what people charge for instrument cases.

It's perfect for carrying both my A22 and A25 frypans. Great for taking both to a Kanikapila and jamming with other Hawaiian musicians.
Enjoy!

I have done it. There are times I look back and I wonder why nobody stopped me because I was walking around with a rifle case.

Iβve quite a few shotgun and rifle hard cases and travel cases. Many are perfect for lap steels.
Maybe I should carry a couple shotguns in my Sho-Bud hard case?

A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first.

I got one of those Plano pick and pluck cases for a long lap steel. The thing weighs about 10lbs!

It may weigh 10lbs, but it's also waterproof, super tough, and you can fly with it.Joseph Lazo wrote: 26 Mar 2026 6:31 pm I got one of those Plano pick and pluck cases for a long lap steel. The thing weighs about 10lbs!
It even has a pressure equalizer system so that when it's in the luggage compartment of an airplane, it won't have any issues at altitude.
I only wish they made one smaller than 36".
Condition 1 makes good, and affordable pelican style ip67 cases as well. Lifetime warranty.
With as much as instrument manufacturers charge for their cases, you might as well buy a PLANO or Condition 1.

Re: Gun case for steel guitar? Why not!
The case I got is surprisingly light-weight.... without the pillar it is a little flimsy, but with the guitar in it it's surprisingly robust. Shipping weight, in the cardboard box, was 2.4kg, about 5.25lbs. I can't imagine a case working and being much lighter.Joseph Lazo wrote: 26 Mar 2026 6:31 pm I got one of those Plano pick and pluck cases for a long lap steel. The thing weighs about 10lbs!
