Test run of adding tab to video—Sweet Georgia Brown

Post by Mike Neer »

This is something that I have been trying to incorporate into my video workshops for a while, and I finally have a passable representation. I am not looking for perfection and super high-end graphics, I just need it to be easily readable and not too much of a pain in the ass to do. While I love doing the workshops and want them to be the way I envision them, I don’t want them to be overly burdensome either. I just got my Apple Pencil Pro and an iPad Pro, so my capabilities are growing daily.

I only used the view from underneath out of convenience and not wanting to run the whole rig. This workshop gets published this weekend. Sign up if you haven’t already and you’ll receive a link with log in info via email when it is available.

You've really hit on a great way of presenting how to play a song in whatever tuning you're using. Nice job!

That is awesome Mike. Really coming along. I have learned a few arrangements from this fellow on guitar and I think he has the best system I have found for YouTube teaching videos. Unfortunately I think he wrote the code for the devices he uses himself, but maybe you can get some ideas from his setup which is similar to yours.

Thanks, Tim. Originally my idea was to have scrolling tab but I decided against it for a number of reasons, chiefly 1) It moves too quickly and is distracting, and 2) it’s too much work. It’s already a lot of work putting these workshops together and I don’t want to get too bogged down in minutia because then it’s not fun for me and I will get bored. The tab is just kind of guideline so you can see the principles at play, and i really like the flexibilty of just being able to grab my Apple Pencil and write something down. As you see, I don’t even worry about rhythmic notation, it’s just a line containing a phrase.

This is just an opportunity to share things that I’ve learned and continue to learn even though I am kind of winding down my career in music. I will only continue to do them as long as there is interest in it. There is definitely a limited audience, but I still want to sort of gatekeep my content a little, which is why I keep it for subscribers only. I definitely don’t want AI modeling my stuff.

I get that for sure otherwise what's the point! I am the same way. What you are doing is super cool and seems very functional as is so keep it up.
