Need a spare cavity plate for my Rickenbacher B8,

Post by Mike Bonnice »

I'd like to get a cavity plate for my Rickenbacher 8-string bakelite steel guitar. I want to put both the tone and volume potentiometers on the side opposite my hands. You can see by a previous post of mine that I'm using a dual concentric pot so that I don't need to put the tone pot under my right hand. viewtopic.php?p=3202476&hilit=b8+tone#p3202476. This arrangement limits the type and taper of potentiometers for tone and volume.

Of course I could drill a hole in my existing plate, but I'd regret that if I change my mind and go back to the original orrangement.

I think the ideal part would be salvaged from a later model where both the controls were on the same side. I assume the later plates would fit but I don't know that for sure. However, some sort of replacement reproduction would work if it can be chrome plated.

Please reply if you know of a source for such a plate.

Aloha Mike,

I've seen those Bakelite cavity covers pop up every now and again on sites like eBay and Reverb.

It's kinda hit and miss.

A thing that works in your favor about the Rickenbacher Bakelites is that they all used the same body, whether B6, B7, or B8. So just about any original Bakelite cover you find should work. *knock on wood*.

Other than that, maybe contact George at Georgeboards.com. He may be able to 3D print one for you.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
Aloha,

Mike K

Aloha e Mike K.,

Thanks for the tips, I enabled some automated searches on eBay and Reverb to see what I can find. Georgeboards will reply after the holidays.

I have a friend with access to 3D scanner and 3D printer, we might try it ourselves. If we can make something that is strong and that can be chrome plated then I'm up for DIY.

A guy here , several years back , had a sheet metal man fabricate a whole set … used an English Wheel to get the curves.

Then sent them for show chroming (triple plated) Cu -> Ni ->Cr

He didn’t care about the $$$ …. They were beautiful 🤔
