ETS models?

Post by Bill McCloskey »

Where there any other models of the ETS pedal steel other than an S10? Did they ever make a D10?

I'd love to hear from other ETS owners. I absolutely love mine.

As Bud was a Bb6 guy AFAIK, it'd surprise me if there wasn't a 12.
There were under 200 made before we lost Bud, so they'll be kinda rare.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

I'd love to get hold of one of those.

This thing is so cool: the ultimate grab and go. I can lift the case with one hand like a guitar. And it sound great. Pedals are short so they are little harder to press than my mullen G2 which is like butter, but small complaint

I was never aware of any ETS models other than the S-10. I remember when Larry Agan who was building them was tragically killed in a car accident during the TSGA - I visited with him for awhile and looked at the instrument or instruments on display and the next day we all learned he had passed away. He seemed like a very nice man. They seemed like cool guitars.

Hi again Bill re my last post in my research there were only 160 of those ETS guitars built and as far as I could tell they were only S-10s. Here is a pic of the red sparkle i had

when I wanted to add a pedal to an ETS I had, they were already out of business, no parts available, and I installed a new Carter pedal i bought from Al Brisco.. It was a bit shorter than the ETS pedal, otherwise very close, and worked fine... I really miss that ETS... The sound, sustain, and playability of that guitar was stunning, especially for the prices they were going for at the time. No one was much interested.. It was a sweet, very old school sound, very much like an early wood body pedal steel, even though there wasn't a splinter of wood anywhere in that guitar.. I don
't know how they did it, except that Bud Carter knew how to make a great sounding and great playing pedal guitar... bob

Actually Bob I am confused that you could not find any ETS parts for your guitar. I guess that would have depended on when you wanted to ad that pedal. When we bought out Al Brisco's stock when he retired, we received a lot of ETS parts including about 1/2 dozen pedals. We still have one in stock.

Also Michael Yahl has 230 of them in stock as I right this plus other vital parts.

My conversations with Bud when he was still with us and my experience with the red sparkle one that we owned was that the necks on those guitars were Maple and the bodies were formed and welded aluminum. This was done to keep the cost and the weight down.
I never got into who or how all the parts were made on those guitars. but we did talk about after John Fabian passed He/Bud was in possession of a lot of left over Carter parts. The carter changers, fretboards and key heads. These were used on the ETS guitars. You can see this in the picture of our guitar we owned.
I hope this clears up some of the confusion and will help someone in the future with restoring or upgrading one of these wonderful guitars
Thanks

I should not have said "no parts available".. The fact that I added a pull tells us otherwise of course.. I seem to recall that maybe I used some carter parts from Al, or perhaps a combination of Carter and ETS parts.. I DO know the pedal was not the same length, although the configuration was pretty close to what was originally on the ETS.. It was quite a while ago, but I thought Al said there were no ETS pedals available at that time, and that a Carter pedal would work.. All I do know is that it was slightly different from the factory pedals. I wonder if this happened before Al bought all the ETS stuff? So long ago.. I do remember having to piece some parts together , and that the pedal was a different length, but it worked fine at the time...bob
