The beginning chord of Procol Harum's Salty Dog, Name?

Post by Joachim Kettner »

I am not a piano player, so I tried it on guitar: A C-chord with an added F-sharp on the high E-string worked. Now I wonder what it is called.

Bbm6/Db (where the Db is in the bass), Could also be Gm7b5/Db

This is an interesting one. It contains only Db, F and G - so it can't really be called a Bb chord. The next two chords are Csus and C, so it's functioning as a subdominant in the expected key of Fm (although that cadence is interrupted by a return to Db), and is therefore a Gm7b5 chord (as Mike suggests) but without the Bb.
So on the steel, it's not really a named chord, but a cluster you can reverse-engineer from your Csus of choice.

Thanks for the replies. The guitar I've used for figuring out the chords was tuned a half step up. For me now playing in the right key is Db. I'm on the ninth fret ( which is probably not the correct position) holding down strings 1 and 2 with my index, and fretting the G-string on the 12th fret. It doesn't sound wrong, but still not perfect. ! would rather play it further down the neck, like many guys in the tutorials do, but I haven't arrived there yet.
My interest in this song was revived by reading Stefan Zweig's biography of Magellan recently, and other books by J.Conrad.

9th fret sounds right. I'm not near an instrument at the moment, but on 5,6 and 8 engage the X lever, then release it while sliding back to the 8th, engaging the B and then releasing it.
There will be other ways....
