Buddy's well known love for Buddy Charleton sure shines through, without it being a copy.
Fantastic; what great touch, tone, and phrasing.
Thanks for posting - hadn't heard that in a long time.

Thats good, but I dunno, Shorty's voice is kind of tough to listen to.. Here's a better early pre NRPS example of Buddy's signature E9 style, way up in the mix, and takes up a LOT of the song...

Here’s another slightly obscure Buddy track from the North Country album by George Hamilton IV. Lenny Breau is also on the record. Note the ascending chromatic “Hello MaryLou” lick. :)

Dave you made my day.. GREAT pic of a young Buddy, sunglasses, long hair parted in the middle, looking cool, and the topper is the head stock of the Fender Electric XII, one of the all time great electric 12 strings!!!.. Love those guitars even though they were always overshadowed by the Ric 12... I bought one as a 16 year old, off the wall, and it was in a VERY rare custom color, Ice Blue Metallic,, They are worth a fortune these days.. I will never forget that guitar,.. I traded it at around 18 years old in 1972 or so, for a 1966 Dodge Hemi Charger, in good shape!,, Only problem was someone took the Hemi out and put a 383 in it... The guy I traded with was a friend that was deeply troubled later in life and committed suicide.. anyway, thats all beside the point, which is of course this song.. Loved it.. Only problem was at a few points in the tune, Buddy was walking all over the vocals.. I always loved his playing, but man, he always made sure his steel parts got heard, even if it meant stomping on the vocals a little! It was kind of his trademark.. I don't think todays producers would let it fly.. They would cut out 98% of those cool bouncy happy sound E9 licks,, anyway, thanks for posting this Dave.. Never knew Buddy played with George Hamilton IV. bob

There was vocals on that tune? :) joking!

Buddy also tracked on a handful of Anne Murray records…I doubt he got away with what you are addressing. The busy steel seemed to work well with NRPS though.

Love hearing these tracks! I'm a huge Buddy Cage fan but have never heard these. Buddy was really kind to me when I transitioned from lap steel to pedal steel, had a few very helpful phone calls and emails with him. I love his wild attitude and his daring - listen to those chromatic licks and how he plays right over the vocal, always with perfect intonation and tone. That's not an approach I can use all that often (playing on top of the vocal) but I love hearing him do it. I get goosebumps listening to his solos on the old NRPS shows - my first recorded pedal steel was a straight rip off of those licks!
