My Daughters Wedding Processional

Post by Rick Aiello »

I have been asked by my daughter to play the Hawaiian Wedding Song as the Processional for her wedding …

I have a rather difficult Jerry Byrd arrangement for it … but it requires many slants … I needed to get these reverse slants and forward slants “straightened” out so I could vibrato them (I have Parkinson’s and slanting is out) …

All this hand lever talk lately on the forum here gave me an idea …

I have a ShoBud Pro III pedal steel (I put my own pickups in there) ….the issue was, the C6 pedals didn’t help me accomplish throwing the slant positions needed for this song … So I figured out how to change the pedal setup.

These changes make no sense in the conventional paradigm of multiple chords played on one fret …. So I didn’t want to post this in the PSG section …. The changes are strictly there to eliminate slanting while staying on a pair of strings to harmonize them.

I left the High E alone …

I put a C to C# raise (reverse slant on string 1-2)

I put a A to Ab lower (forward slant on string 2-3)

I put a G to Ab raise (reverse slant on strings 1-4)

I put a G to Gb lower (split slant strings 1,2-4)

I put an E to Eb lower (forward slant on strings 2-5 and 4-5)

So here’s the final version of the “Hawaiian Wedding Song” played on a pedal steel guitar pretending to be a lap steel (I tried real hard not to include the sound of the actual pedal changing sounds) …… it’s also my first venture into real recording, mixing and mastering … I did my best 🤠

Mahalos …

The ShoBud Pro III Custom was really an exchange of gifts … I made a cast aluminum combo : steel & amplifier …. and gave it to my buddy … a couple years later … the ShoBud showed up in the mail (in a serious shipping container) 🤪

It sat , untouched for years until I got tired of playing only single string stuff and decided to try and use the PSG as a “slant machine” instead of a chordal monster.

The all-pull mechanism was easy enough to figure out and work on ….

Anyway, thanks for the nice comments …

Awesome! While a bunch of us are trying to make our lap steels sound like a pedal steel (string pulls, palm benders) here you are doing the opposite. :P I can't get over how much the tone and movement sounds like one of your lap steel recordings. I'm sure some of it has to do with using your own pickup but a lot of it has to do with that special touch that you provide. What Would Rick Do? Something well outside the box!

The stock ShoBud pickups (sealed in plastic now) were too noisy in my basement. I have a dairy farm next door with an electric fence that produces a very audible “electric”tick every 15 seconds …
I made it a pair of humbuckers , nice and quiet now
IMG_2024.jpeg
I had to take those top two strings off the E9 neck and the Top string on the C9 neck … I have to have an E on top 🤔

I recorded the song on the computer so there’s no video … but here’s one from several months ago when I first started messing around with all this … it’s my most “slant laden” tune … “Drowsy Waters” …

I'm so glad you're doing the best you can given your medical issues. It sounds great to me, and I'm sure your daughter and family will be proud of your playing. Thanks for sharing!

That's awesome, Rick! Very deep on a human level and as a parent, it tugs at the heartstrings. It is so easy to take things for granted. You've shown us that adapting and continuing to move forward is possible with a positive mindset and love.

Mucho mahalos Gentlemen … 🤠

I was pretty scared of having a 4 minute slow song blasted through PA speakers as I walked my daughter down the aisle … 🤪

Especially since my only “recording” experience involves aiming my amp and backup boombox at my iPhone and hitting record. 🤔

The E9 neck was different … it had all the changes I needed already there …

The most important of these to me was the G# to G lower, but it was on a knee lever. I like pedals over knee levers so I swapped out the C pedal change with that knee lever 🧐

Anyway, thanks again for all the support !!!

Congratulations :!: I love it 8) I've often said that they invented pedals so mortal man can play like Jerry Byrd ;-)

Very nice, Rick, what a special treat for a special daughter. I hope your Parkinson’s doesn’t progress quickly-my wife Sheryl was diagnosed in 2020, has some resting tremors on the left side, but she is still playing piano and pipe organ in church services. And, still playing drums with our “retired” band on Thursday jam nights. How many years have you been living with it?

I was diagnosed in 2022, but my wife (an MD) suspected it for several years before that …

The tremors are worse on my left side … and progressively get worse as the day goes on …

I have found that they are mildest in the early morning … so I get up and play before dawn … by 8-9 am, I’m toast 😆

I feel your pain on this one... My neighbor has honeybees and uses an electric fence to discourage bears.

It took me a bit to figure out where that "tick" was coming from!
