How do I regain the use of tone controls on my Tonex after update?

Amplifiers, effects, pickups, electronic components, wiring, etc.

How do I regain the use of tone controls on my Tonex after update?

Post by Wiz Feinberg »

I am still trying to learn to use my full size Tonex pedal. It received an update a few months ago and since then, any preset that I load, or select, tends to go crazy when I start rotating the bass, middle and treble pots, but, especially the mids. That has become some kind of noise gate threshold control that kills the sound if I turn it anywhere near 50%, or higher. It no longer controls the mid boost or cut. When I go to the menu for any preset, the tone controls are missing completely (no frequency adjustments). Do I need to revert to the previous version, or is there a hidden setting to restore the use of the tone controls while I am playing through the pedal?

Before the update, I could play through it with any presets and alter the bass, middle and treble on the fly. It would change the active light from green to orange, allowing me to continue playing, or altering the tones until I chose to save them, or not. Does anybody know if it's possible to regain the real-time use of the tone controls and not lose some of the new modulation and echo settings? Or, is it one or the other? I'd choose the old menu items on the Parameters knob.

Note, I've not taken the pedal on a gig because I can't get a sound I like on it that emulates my Nashville 112 or 400 amplifiers without having low volume, or unusable tone controls, or overload of the Tonex itself.

Thanks in advance!

Wiz
Did you back it up before you updated the software? Did you save your original presets somewhere?

I'm trying to remember if you can set it back to its default setting. Try that and see what happens.

No, I didn't back it up. I don't recall seeing an option box to do that. It simply opened with a notice that an update was ready. The same thing happened yesterday when I connected it to my PC and opened the Editor program. The unit went dark during the update, then came back to life. There was no option to back up the existing firmware.

I spent a couple hours fussing with it last night, but to no avail. I can only set the tone controls in the Editor. And, despite me turning off the noise gate for all amps, anytime I rotate what was the Middle tone pot, it reactivates the noise gate!

Joe, I've imported your various IR files into the library, but they don't appear in the speaker options of the CAB section when I try to assign a cabinet to an amp. Is there a trick to getting all of the speakers to appear as choices in the drop down CAB menu on the Editor?

Clarification. When I use the Tone Model Browser, it only shows four options under Hardware. When I click on Software, all the speaker files are over there. How do I associate my speakers with the hardware cabinet options?

Wiz,
I too get that software message, but don't always allow it.

Before you do anything else, back it up. I also backed it up to a thumb drive. I did a YouTube instruction on it and I hope it's helpful to you.

I got some advice from a member of a Facebook Tonex group that showed me how to access the EQ settings in the parameters menu, then, how to be able to keep the knobs acting as bass, middle and treble rather than controlling other effects. Basically, one can change all the settings available by changing the Model and Amp settings knobs. Various settings only appear when the ALT light is activated. As long as that LED is on, one cannot use the tone control knobs in real time. The Model/Select knob is used to turn the ALT functions on and off. Once it is turned off, the tone controls act like they did before the big firmware update a couple months ago.

I find that it is way too easy to accidentally adjust a parameter and then the tone controls are gone and the damned noise gate replaces the Middle tone control. The gate kills the signal unless it is fully counterclockwise. I wish I could disable the Gate permanently. I tried disabling it under the Global settings, but it came back on after I adjusted something else with the parameters knob. SMH!
