A cappella Byrd

Post by Rick Aiello »

Here’s one you might have missed … it was the last song on a Ukulele Compilation album that JB played on.

Story goes, he was messing around between songs and the engineer recorded him playing “Kauai Beauty” a cappella … and the producers liked it so much they put it on the album.

Mahalo for sharing, Rick!

Man, you can hear Jerry's "P'tah" attack all over this recording. It's such a great example!

Thanks for sharing these old recordings. Most of them are lost to time because they never got digitized off the record.

I often think to myself when studying Scotty's transcriptions of Jerry's recordings, "what record did this come from?" There is only so much available on streaming platforms.
Aloha,

Mike K

Thanks, Rick. JB's impeccable touch, volume pedal shadings, vibrato and impossibly perfect intonation still unequaled.

Sounds wonderful, wish there were more of these solo recordings. It sounded, at first, like it might be in B11th tuning but I soon realized that it has to be Jerry’s E9th tuning. Very rich indeed.

Hey Rick, do you know what particular steel Jerry played on this recording?

It was circa 1995 … his main steel was the ShoBud 7/8. …but he usually plays his E9 songs sitting down with his ShoBud frypan …

I vote for frypan 🤪

He didn’t play on every track of the compilation … but he was on a lot off them .
