Recommended mini ("micro") overdrive pedals?

Post by Rob Morrison »

I'd love to get a Sarno Earth Drive mini, but I only have space on my pedalboard for a true mini enclosure (what some might call a micro). Any recommendations for something that sounds natural and works well with pedal steel?

What are the dimensions of the space in your motherboard? The Sarno Earth Drive mini looks pretty small to me.

I went through every drive pedal possible and finally settled on the old standby - TS-808. I compared a number of mini-pedals to my Analogman TS-808 modded TS-9, and this one seemed to totally the same to my (albeit old) ears:

Smooth but not violin smooth, just enough grit to have character...
I like the violin-type Keeley pedals for guitar, but on steel, it is violin-like enough without help...

Chassis Box - 1590A, Diecast, 3.64" x 1.52" x 1.06" Either Hammond or equivalent. See if Brad can stuff the Earth Drive electronics in this "Twinkie size enclosure".

The new Sarno "Space Dust" is in mini form and just might replace my "King of Tone". I used it on a few gigs now and I'm very happy with it.

I have a lil' Rat that I like a lot - might be a bit too hot for what you're looking for, but in my experience they can cover a wide range from medium gain to very distorted 8)

Nice and small too!

I've got a 2" x 5" space for a pedal, so only a true "mini" will fit. For reference, something like the enclosure an MXR Phase 95 is on the money.

I love Rats! I actually put a Mooer Black Secret (Rat clone) first in my chain. My recent experiment involves putting the Black Secret on a leg clamp on my steel, so I can run it before my volume pedal (so far I'm liking this way more than having it after the VP). But I'm using the Rat for pretty high-gain distortion sounds, and now that it's off my board, I want a more "standard" overdrive behind the volume pedal. I know steel folks love the Earth Drive so I'm curious to find something akin to it if I can.

Can't go wrong for PSG with any of Brad Sarno's product. Now he has Earth Drive, Earth Drive mini, and the newly announced Space Dust mini.

My $.02 :)

I'm currently in love with two Wampler minis:

Low gain, more open and transparent, the Belle.

More gain, compression and mids, the Moxie,

https://www.wamplerpedals.com/products/ ... ive/moxie/

Now, both are versatile enough to do both low OR higher/mid gain, but as described is how I use them. Highly recommended!

Wampler pedals are great! And if you like Rats - they make a mini Rat. It’s called the Ratsbane. It sounds fantastic!
