Keepin’ It Real free full download

Post by Mike Neer »

It’s been just over a year since I’ve released Keepin’ It Real, my most recent CD. The record didn’t quite have the success that Steelonious did, but I am proud of the music and the work that went into it. I got some really nice reviews and people said some crazy good stuff about it. But I’d like more people to hear it, of course, and to get a chance to hear a) Sol Hoopii’s Rickenbacher BD6 in action, though, sadly, not in his hands, b) that you can still get a ton of playing out of a 6 string C6 tuning, c) that the lap steel can do lots of other things than they tell you, and d) the guest soloists are dear friends and world-class musicians who make the world a better place and deserve to be heard. Yes, it’s jazz, and some a little challenging, but I want to open up ears.

Please download the music to your computer, phone or whatever and give a listen sometime. If it inspires someone a little, I’d be happy. Free download in all different formats.

Not trying to twist any arms, but maybe even some pedal steel players might dig this. Maybe not, but you never know….

As I told you privately Mike, first time I heard jazz on a steel guitar that I actually enjoyed. You really hit the nail on the head. Great album.

Thanks for the reminder! Keeping' It Real is a bit more my vibe than your older one. A super good and not at all hokey take on Steel Guitar and jazz.

Many thanks, Peter! I put a lot of myself into it. It was truly a labor of love.

I don’t know if everyone gets that the “Real” in the title is referring to the Real Book. I’ve had that 5th Edition that’s on the cover for so many years, bought it under the counter at Sweetest Sounds Music somewhere around 1983. There were always many tunes in there that I wasn’t familiar with, but many that I was. I picked out some of my faves. African Flower is my favorite on the record, but I’m pleased with all the tracks. It’s a good summer listening record.

I am actually sitting on my patio listening again for the first in a good while and I really dig the tracks. My guests are all friends who I have known and played with a while, some for almost 30 years, some more recently. Playing solo now almost a year has really made me miss the interaction or exchange of ideas.
