Modernized version of tab from Emmons E9 course on vinyl?

Post by John McClung »

Has anyone updated the tab from Buddy Emmon's course, "Learn to Play the Pedal Steel Guitar"? As you can see from this sample, it predates current tab conventions and is very tough to read and play.

Hoping someone has already revamped it and would be willing to share it, saving me hours of work to modernize this terrific course from the mid-1970s!

I don't believe it's in print now, anyone know otherwise?

Thanks, y'all! Ernie Renn, chime in.

Thanks.

Hey John,
Larry T here! I never saw that particular teaching. I thought I had everything that Buddy ever put out. That would be good to update. If no one responds, I'd be glad to chip in and help update it with you for a copy!!??

Have a good one!

Larry, I've already embarked on updating The Way to Survive, in my painstaking manual way in my page layout program, QuarkXPress! I'll share out the final result when I'm done.

Here's Buddy's page one:

Here's mine, not yet final:

I applaud your attempt to bring this tab course into a more user-friendly form. I owned it once upon a time and ended up keeping the tracks but not the tab.

Here's something I had laying around: solo 1 of "I Just Destroyed The World" from "Learn To Play E9" by the Big E.

Let us know how the project goes.

Looks very good, Frank, I may eventually reformat it, give you credit for sure!

I once tried to transcribe C6 tab, the 52 weeks course that Doug Jernigan did for Emmons Guitar, to E9 with the E's lowered. I used a spreadsheet program's grid to make the 10 spaces for the tab and darkened the horizontal lines using the format/borders function. I entered the fret numbers and the letters for pedals/levers into the vertical columns. Once you have entered everything you can click on View/girdlines to turn off the spreadsheet's grid leaving just the tab and entered numbers and letters. It still takes a lot of time to transcribe so I'm not shure it's any easier than the way you have done it. Also, to print it you need to setup the page to landscape and the size paper your going to use. I used the legal size paper and with the font size I selected I only had two 10 space tabs per page. This made it easy to read from a music stand set in front of the steel. I have to give credit to Greg Cutshall for the idea of using a spreadsheet. He uses one for all the tabs he does. If I need an image of the tab I use a screen snapshot program and crop as needed.

John -

Compared to current styles of tablature, what makes the Original Emmons' courses appear to be somewhat 'cluttered' are the indications of which fingers to use to pick with.

When I had this course, I used some old fashioned 'white-out' to hide all the t's, a's and b's on each line of tab.

The specified Pedal and Knee Lever designations were allowed to remain below the staff lines.

Simply 'hiding' the finger designations on the Original tab made a useful difference for my use.

I did the same thing with Doug Jernigan's tab of "Streets of Laredo."

I’ve thought about re-doing this tab in TabEdit many times, but other things always seem to take priority. One issue I see is the copyright. I mean, what would you do with the completed project? Give it away? Sell it? or just keep it for your own use? And the audio that comes with it (Buddy playing), selling or giving that away might be problematic as well.

FYI, I have Buddy’s E9th course, Doug’s C6th course, and a Herby Wallace course of these vintages all on LP’s.

I just discovered them while unpacking a lifetime of things from the attic of our previous house. I’m discovering all sorts of courses, recordings and publications that I acquired over the years

We’re still getting settled, but if someone needs the tracks I can try to have them converted to digital format. Btw, I’m not sure of the quality.

That is a most gracious offer on electronic recordings of the original LP's
Please keep me in mind.

Larry, would you be willing to translate Buddy's tab into a more up-to-date version in simple handwriting? That's one big step and job, the final one is me making it look really nice in my desktop publishing app. I can get you a sample song and tab and see how it goes on just one tune before you commit to all 10 songs. ◼︎ You still playing that Infinity and liking it?
