Grand Ole Opry member Jan Howard passed away today. Jan had many of her own records but was most known for her duets with Bill Anderson. Rest in peace.

That’s sad news , she was a lovely lady I had the honour to play Steel for on her U.K. tour. Jean Shepard, Skeeter Davis and Jeannie Seely were also with her , that means Jeannie is the only survivor now. I seem to remember Jan being the posh and quieter member of the team but she was very likeable. RIP Jan. I still have the charts for that tour and the musical director was John ? , he also played piano with the rest of us in the backing band , I’d love to know if he’s still around and what was his surname.

She was interviewed for the Vietnam documentary by Ken Burns. She lost a son in that conflict, and she recounted some words she'd had for some Vietnam protestors that came to her door. She didn't mince words about not supporting their protest... let me just say that. I realized upon seeing that just how solid she was in her principles, and that she could be one tough lady. Her sweet voice would never give it away! She will be missed.

Jan Howard lived through a lot of hard times, four marriages (one to a bigamist), two sons died violently, depression. Through it all she displayed a strong will. Her description of her life upon learning of her son's death in Vietnam is chilling. Those of us who served during the Vietnam era owe her a lot for her sacrifices and dedication to us. She believed and stood up for us when few others did. She had our back.
