I get a .message "This disc is locked. How do I unlock it?

There is really important stuff on my old iMac computer that I need to get off and onto a disc. When I put in a black disc, I get a message that the disc is unreadable and do I want to initialize it. I click on yes, then get a message that initialization failed because the disc is locked. How do I unlock it?

George, can you clarify what type of disc you are referring to? Is this a CD or a old floppy disk?

I may not have the right disc. I am needing to transfer some photo's off the computer and onto the disc. The disc's that I am using are Sony CD-R Compact Disc Recordable supremas 700 MB
