John Gettis has passed away.

Post by David Alexander »

It's saddens me deeply to say that long time Dallas, TX steeler John Gettis has passed away. He was the steel player at several of the Cowboys clubs including the ones in Dallas, Arlington and San Antonio. I've known John for over 35 years and will miss him dearly! He could sure make his old Emmons Push Pulls talk. He, Buddy and all the other greats up in Heaven are watching over all of us wannabes tonight. RIP my good friend, you will be missed by all!

Hate to hear about this. I didn't know John really well, but we did have a few great conversations, chatting about music and steel guitar. He had a great sarcastic sense of humor as well! He always tried to convince me that I should be playing an old Push Pull.

John Gettis

I first met John in the early 90's when he called me to audition for his replacement position in a local Dallas band. After getting the job, John called me to ask how I was doing and to find out if I needed any song tabs or material that would help me. We soon became great friends and realized we had much in common, not just steel guitar. John introduced me to some of the best barbecue and breakfast places in Texas. He always had a great kind word for the Texas steel community which I soon learned to appreciate just as much. After leaving Texas, we spoke on the phone every few months, his conversations were always inspiring and left me smiling. I will miss my friend but, will always have very fond memories.
