RIP Little Jimmy Dickens

Post by Jack Strayhorn »

The last of the originals has made his transition. The Opry and our music will never be the same. The greatest entertainer and interpreter of song.

I met him in 1980 on the Opry. He was responsible for a lot of musicians careers, brought Buddy Emmons to Nashville if I remember right.. Nice man, great entertainer! RIP Mr. Dickens… A classic with Big E. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tkEotkyjHU

A friend to steel guitar for sure

I have to share this:

A friend of mine who works in construction was on the crew to do some repairs on Jimmy's house just a few years ago. He was telling me at the time that Jimmy wasn't up to par, but his sense of humor was very much in tact. So as the story was told to me, the contractor was there overseeing the job, & while "inspecting" what the other workers were doing, Jimmy with a deadpan expression walks up behind the contractor, nudges him, then hands him one of those DIY home repair books. HAW!!!!!!!!!

RIP Tater!!

Our loss is heaven's gain. He was not only a great performer, but he has written some of the best country ballads ever. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, brother.

"Tone is in the hands. Unless your wife will let you buy a new amp. Then it's definitely in that amp."

We need to turn the TWANG up a little

It's not what you play through, it's what you play through it.

They say that tone is all in the fingers...I say it is all in your head :)

Some of the best pieces of life are the little pieces all added up..Ron

the value of friendship. Old friends shine like diamonds, you can always call them and - most important - you can't buy them.

This really hits home for me. Tater used to come to our little town and perform numerous times back in the fifties. As a youngster I'd always go back stage and visit with him between shows. I remember he had a whole passle of rhinestone Nudie-type suits he carried with him on the road. I told him that one day I'd like to pick and grin and do it for a living. He said, "Don't give up son. Just keep at it". Everytime he saw me he'd ask if I was still playing and singing. I told him I was, and again he'd say, "Well, son you stay with it". I did, and the music business has been very good to me for close to seventy years. I wrote Tater a letter a few years ago in care of the Op'ry and thanked him for all his encouragement. I hope he got to read it. He was always kind and very patient with a young fellow who asked millions of questions about country music.
RIP peace my friend. Your work on earth is done.

This hurts so bad. I watch this video often to remind me of how great country music and the Grand Ole Opry used to be. Great steel work here by Pee Wee Rogers who was with Tater for about 30 years. He's gone now too. RIP

Although not unexpected, the cold hard reality is still a shock and hurts. One of the last originals of the golden era is gone.

RIP, Tater and Thanks for all those hours of entertaining you gave us.

Jack Strayhorn's post is most eloquent and true. I will never forget the times at the Grand Ole Opry playing for the Dickens. His walk over to me at the steel guitar and saying, "pretty good"as a hello to me was something I'll cherish forever.

Tater was the consummate performer. I've been on "Opry Legend" shows with him and he was the "star" of the show.

RIP.

It used to really drive me wacko when I'd hear him jump time going into the bridge on his signature song "Old Cold Tator & Wait" . . . he never could get that thing right. Now I guess I'll miss hearing him do it.
