Not sure of the singer, is it Eddy Albert? The steel sounds like Pete Drake to me.

Tough call. If it is Pete Drake - I wonder if he's playing through the talk box but just using it as a filter.

Its not Pete Drake....Its someone copying Pete's style...Probably by request...My guess is Stu Basore based on a tonal difference from Pete....There were also other guys including Jeff Newman and Larry Sasser who on request played that style very convincingly back in the late 60's and early 70's.....

Not sure of the steel but the singer sounds a lot like Kris Kristofferson in his younger days. He was one heck of a writer.lol

Thanks Paul for turning my head to this track again. I was pretty sure that it is Pete Drake, but you are right, there are some parts that don't sound like him.

The singer is Harlan Howard and the track comes from his 1965 album "All Time Favorite Country Songwriter", produced by Fred Foster and released originally on Monument 18038. Acc. to the liner notes, the album was recorded with Bob Moore on Bass, Buddy Harmon on Drums, Ray Edenton on Rhythm Guitar, Harold Bradley on Lead Guitar and Floyd Cramer on Piano, arranged by Bill Justis. As usual, the liner notes omit the name of the Steel Player! Maybe the information helps to identify the steeler - who was already working the studios in 1965? It is interesting to note that only four or five tracks on the album have significant steel while the others are dominated by guitars, in the Folk-Country sound of the era (like Bobby Bare or the early Waylon).

Was Jeff Newman already doing sessions at the time? Maybe it is him?
