Joe Mcham passed away....

My friend Joe Mcham passed away today. I'm saddened but feel truly blessed to have known him. He was a sweet spirit that loved steel guitar and was a good friend. I'll miss our conversation all though they were too few. Before internet he tracked me down after I wrote my book on the universal guitar...And we've been friends ever since. He was just a great guy! I'll miss him....Fly high angel!

So sorry to hear this sad news. I worked with Joe some back in the late 60's in North Texas, but lost contact with him after I left the area in early 1970. I started playing steel in April of last year, and had gotten re-acquainted with Joe. He was an inspiration and offered tips and critiques to help me get started.

Sorry to see Joe passed. Even though I did not know him we still feel loss as well. We will be thinking of the family in this time. Good words have been said of him so I know another good one gone. The words on the page don't seem like much but to mom and myself we read every day for the post so I felt I had to ad a post it does help to know someone does care. The day I will remember for it is my birthday.

Joe became a friend when he lived here in the Austin area, but we lost touch the last decade or so. He was a big Julian Tharpe devotee, as I remember.

I'm so sorry to hear this. Joe was one of the first members of this forum, and a contributor to my web site before the forum even existed. I never met him in person, but we shared emails often and I considered him a friend.

Thanks Scotty for posting this. I am sorry to hear this news.

Joe and I had contact off and on over the years as we both had a mutual friend, Julian Tharpe. Joe took steel lessons from Julian years ago and he owned a steel that had once belonged to Julian. He used Julian's short tuning on his 12 stringer.

Joe was a great guy and family man. Prayers for his
family and friends.

My sincerest condolences to the McHam family. Joe was one of the first people on the Forum I exchanged emails with about 12-string tunings. He gave me some great insights as to what direction to go.

Joe Anton McHam 5/13/1941 to 11/20/2013
Joe grew up in Paris, TX. At 20 years old, he joined the Navy and was an electronics engineer on airplanes. At that age, he also learned the steel guitar which he played everyday until the prostate cancer was overwhelming. He spoke to people all over the world on his ham radio (WA5OKT)
He worked at White Sands Missile Range where he created a wind tunnel. He worked at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX as a computer help desk consultant.
He leaves behind a wife, Dr. Joan Breuer, a brother Willie Person, 3 daughters: Kim McHam of Paris, TX, Stephanie Durante of Austin, TX, and Michelle Hansen of Phoenix, AZ. He also leaves behind a niece and nephew, Verna Sue and Jimbo Aulgur of Hugo, OK, and sister-in-law, Jane Clements of Phoenix, AX.
