Suddenly I cannot watch youtube videos in Firefox.

They work fine in I.E. but I do not use that browser.

How can I reactivate them in Firefox?

I just get the anodyne message - an error has occurred !!!

Could be one of your Firefox add-ons. I've had similar issues with that.

Disable all of them and see if the videos play. If they do, re-enable them one by one, trying YouTube again each time. The one that's at issue will be the one that prevents the videos from playing after your re-enable it.

YouTube videos are presented in two file formats: Adobe Flash and HTML 5.0 Video Codec encoding. If your browser is fully up to date, it supports HTML 5 audio and video codes and should playback just like any Apple product would (they don't support Adobe Flash at all).

I suppose that not all YouTube videos have been converted into HTML 5 yet. Thus, if your Flash player is uninstalled, disabled, or not up to date, those videos would fail to play.

Out-dated Flash Players are remotely exploitable by exploit kits, such as Redkit, Blackhole, Phoenix and others. It's possible that Firefox version 22+ is blocking an out-dated Flash plug-in for your own protection.

Verify if you have Flash installed and functional, by going to http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/. If the display shows your player is out of date, use the link on the page to visit the download page and upgrade ASAP.

Even though you don't browse with Internet Exploder, it still contains core components used by the operating system for various purposes. So, IE must also be kept updated, including any add-ons and plug-ins specific to it. Flash for IE is ActiveX and must be downloaded as a separate file from the one used in Firefox. Chrome uses an embedded version of Flash that requires the browser itself to be updated, rather than the Flash plug-in.

If none of the above apply, reboot the computer/device and try again.

Thank you both for your advice

(1) I have disabled the addons in turn and find that Adblock is the culprit. Having disabled it, all works OK.

(2) I have an older flash so I have updated that.

Now I have the annoying ads everywhere.

Has anyone else had this particular problem?

I've had occasional issues with AdBlock, and also with MaskMe, but in spite of their shortcomings, they're both very helpful. I leave them on all the time except for the infrequent times they get in the way.

I cannot get you tube to play ,the screen opens but there is an x blocking audio..some of the haggard songs are draging bad & distorted .i have all the updates needed ,any help please .

should i uninstall it and try to download it again ??

What operating system and browser (make and version) are you using when this happens?

YouTube videos play in one of two file formats: Adobe Flash or HTML 5.0 video codecs. In order to watch in Flash, you need Adobe Flash Player. Otherwise, a very modern and current browser is required to interpret the HTML 5 format and display it.

Flash is updated about once a month to plug exploited vulnerabilities. In fact, it was just updated on October 8, 2013. Have you updated Flash to the current version? The landing page in my link will let you know and provide a link to the Flash Download page.

If your browser is not up to date it will cause playback problems on sites like YouTube.

In the meantime, update Flash and reboot. Empty all temporary Internet files from your browser's cache. Disable some toolbars that are not being used. Upgrade any plug-ins or add-ons in use. Reboot and try using YouTube again.

It sounds like you have accidentally clicked on the MUTE. Click on the "X" again to UNMUTE the audio. There is also a slider left-right to adjust the volume.

I'm not sure what the current status of this issue is. But to clear up a couple of things, first, if you do "mute" the audio on a YouTube video, sound won't be "distorted". There won't BE any sound. If you're hearing something and it's distorted, there's some other problem. No idea what without more information, i.e., do local sound files, mp3s, etc, play normally? If so, I'd look at the Flash or codec side of things as previously suggested.

Secondly, one doesn't "install" YouTube, so it can't be "uninstalled". There's some kind of disconnect there.

Doh! I missed that.

A lot of youtube viewers don't notice that little Mute button right next to the play/pause button. They accidentally click on it and the volume shuts completely off, and it stays off until the viewer clicks on the icon again. I'm getting at least four messages a week from people who tell me "there is no sound" on my videos... and I have to explain to them that they have accidentally muted the sound. It's a nuisance and I wish youtube would move that icon elsewhere.
