The one time I was able to meet Buddy Emmons was when JJ Cale was on tour with Buddy and they visited Montreal. The concert was scheduled a Monday night and I arrived at the scene to be confronted by a Security guard at the door stating that the concert was postponed till the next day. I was looking behind the Security guards' shoulder, and I could see the musicians standing on the stage, including Buddy.
I quickly pulled out my musicians union card, and told the guard that I was a representing the union, and I had to speak to the musicians. Funny, it worked and I got into the venue, and was able to speak with Buddy.
I have a very fond memory of that concert the next day, and although the real reason I was going to the concert was to see Buddy, I turned into a JJ fan.
Sad news to hear, My condolences to the family.

I remember listening to JJ Cale a fair amount as a teenager, but cannot say I have heard anything by him in years. So, I am rediscovering his music as I pay my respects to a great musician. I started with his album Troubadour, and indeed there is both Buddy and Lloyd playing steel on that album. Rest in peace knowing that your music lives on.

JJ Cale and steel guitar
Check out JJ's "Troubadour" album--features Lloyd Green and Buddy. Great stuff, made me realize the potential for steel guitar outside of country and swing. Mark Knopfler picked up on this later with his Knotting Hillbillies album a few years ago featuring Paul Franklin.
