Hi Bill, I'm not sure if this is what you need, but I figured I would pass it on...Hopefully it will be helpful-Todd How to Use Your External Hard Drive

How to Use Your External Hard Drive

Transfer and Save Your Recordings

An external hard drive can be used to expand the recording storage capacity a compatible receiver model (612, 622, 722, and 722k) and transfer recordings from one receiver on your account to another. An external hard drive can also be used to turn your model 211, 211k, or 411 receiver into a DVR. To determine if you have a compatible receiver, check the model name on the front of your receiver or go to dish.com/myequipment. For instructions on how to connect an external hard drive, read the section below on Expanding DVR Storage.

For 411, 211, and 211k only

Activating an external hard drive on a 411, 211, or 211k model receiver will turn it into a DVR. For information on how to use a DVR, review the How To Use Your DVR instructions.

Transferring Recordings From Your Receiver To Your External Hard Drive
1. Press MENU on your DISH Network remote control, select “Multimedia,” and then select “My Media.”
2. Select “Send to Device.”
3. Highlight and select each recording you want to transfer to your external hard drive. Once selected, the desired events will have a purple box to the left. After every event has been selected, select “To Archive” to transfer the recordings.

Transferring Recordings From The External Hard Drive To The Receiver
1. Press MENU on your DISH Network remote control, select “Multimedia”, and then select “My Media.”
2. Select “Manage Device”.
3. Highlight and select each recording you want to transfer to your receiver. Once selected, the desired events will have a purple box to the left. After every event has been selected, select “Restore” to transfer the recordings.
4. Events that are transferred from your external hard drive back to your DISH Network receiver are automatically marked as Protected. This will prevent the recording from being overwritten if your receiver’s hard drive becomes full. To unprotect the event, select it in your My Recordings screen and select “Unprotect”.

Watching and Deleting Recordings from The External Hard Drive
1. Press MENU on your DISH Network remote control, select “Multimedia”, and then select “My Media.”
2. Select “Manage Device.”
3. Highlight and select a recording you want to play or delete. Once selected, the desired event will have a purple gem to the left. Select “Play” to view the event, or “Delete” to permanently delete it.

Expanding DVR Storage

An external hard drive can be used to expand the recording storage capacity on a compatible DISH Network receiver (models 612, 622, 722, 722k, or 922). You can keep all of your favorite shows, and transfer recordings from one receiver to another.

To determine if you have a compatible receiver, check the model name on the front of your receiver or visit dish.com/myequipment.

Purchasing a Compatible External Hard Drive
Not all external hard drive models can be used with DISH Network receivers. When purchasing an external hard drive, follow the below guidelines:

Supported External Hard Drive Capacity
Minimum 50GB
Maximum 2TB

External Hard Drive Requirements
•Dedicated power supply
•USB 2.0 support
•Single-platter drive, no flash memory

Expanding the Recording Storage Capacity
1. Plug your external hard drive’s power supply into the electrical outlet nearest to your DISH Network receiver.
2. Connect your USB cable from your external hard drive to your receiver’s USB port. Make sure the external hard drive power supply is plugged in.

A message will appear on the TV screen asking to format the drive. This will permanently delete all content that is currently saved on the hard drive. Select ‘Yes’ to continue.

I did it taking the s-video out from the dish receiver
to s-video in of my dvd recorder and audio left and right to the audio ins and it worked with no problem.
I have also used this method going to a usb capture card for my computer.
