I finally got the code to authorize my rebuilt Windows XP Pro... but the resolution was bad and I couldnt get it fixed .. so some how I disabled the video.. now when i start it i can get to bios and to F8 to safe mode but cant get beyond that ..
at this point i would accept the bad res and 4 bit color,,,
how do i re enable the video when i cant get the monitor go past the windows logo startup page

That does not sound like a "video" problem.
If you can see the screen with the BIOS and get to safe mode, that says the video is working, but the problem is you are not booting into Windows (full Windows not safe mode).
When you first power on the PC, the video card defaults to a VGA mode (and the same way in Safe Mode). Only when Windows loads and loads the driver for the Video, does it go into whatever screen resolution you have set.
You will need to "repair" Windows, most likely (if not a full reinstall) to get it working. As it does boot to the Safe Mode with F8 its partially working. Boot with the Windows install Disc and select "Repair" (instead of install Windows) and if its not damaged to the point a full reinstall is needed the "Repair" should fix it.

It is very possible that if Bo reinstalled Windows from a CD, it didn't also contain the drivers for his motherboard, or add-on cards. If Windows was unable to find a suitable video driver for his hardware, the display would default back to the lowest bitrate supported by the OS.
Bo, did you reinstall the drivers for your motherboard, including your video driver?

Wiz, it sounds like Windows is not loading, except in Safe Mode.
It probably does need all the drivers but Windows should still load.
As far as the drivers, with most PC's (with XP) the correct install is (1) Install Windows (2) Install motherboard chipset drivers (3) Install Device Drivers including Video, sound, ethernet, etc.

This *IS* a conundrum. How/where does one get "the code"? And, not to put too fine a point on it, but, what does one do with said "code", once acquired?Bo Borland wrote:I finally got the code to authorize my rebuilt Windows XP Pro...

This is the new activation code that Microsoft gives out over the telephone, when online registration fails. The person on the other end asks you a few questions, to make sure you have a valid product key in the first place. Then he or she walks you through changing the product key and inputting the new one into the appropriate fields in the Windows Activation Screen. When the conversation is through, Windows is activated.Dave Potter wrote:This *IS* a conundrum. How/where does one get "the code"? The entire process usually takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

windows did initially load but only it a real pixilated strange resolution and only 4 bit.. it would not allow me to change the res..
There could be a problem because the HD came out of an E-Machine and it now resides in a HP .
When i looked at the Hardware manager.. there was a problem with all the video....no drivers or wrong drivers but i could not go online..
At some point i thought disabling the video and re starting would re set everything .. WRONG
I can get only the BIOS screen, SET UP , and F8 screen ..

You cannot use the boot drive from one machine in another machine, which has different hardware, unless you reinstall all of the drivers. You are going to have to use somebody else's computer to go to the manufacturer's website (H.P.) and download all available drivers for your model and serial number. You will probably find some dedicated software packages for it as well. Burn the downloaded driver files to a CD-R.Bo Borland wrote:...

Take the computer and drivers CD to a competent computer repair shop, or Best Buy, and pay them to repair your installation of Windows.

Can you boot into VGA mode? If so, you might be able to load the drivers from the CD.

HI WIz, I was thinking about what you said about not using the boot drive to run another machine.. so i had the original hard drive and re installed it , making my drive the slave.
The machine works fine. video is ok too... how can I access the programs such as Quicken and my other files from the 2nd HD ?
I can see it on the "my computer " window and open files but they don't load and operate.
all my important files are backed up to an external HD that needs access too.
