When I listen to audio that I have on my hard drive like mp3's the sound is compressed and does up and down as the volume of the track changes. How do I shut this off. The tracks are fine. When I put them thru another source they sound fine. Any one had this problem?

Find your mixer, or audio options and disable Stereo enhancement, or whatever sounds like a wide field effect.

Could be your speakers or a bad connection from the speakers to the PC. Connect headphones and see if the sound changes with that too. If the PC does not have a front panel headphone jack, disconnect the speakers at the rear Green speaker jack and plug the headphones into that jack.
If you have a separate sound card (not the integrated - on the motherboard audio) you could reseat the sound card (with the PC powered off) and see if that helps, too.
