Keith Moon solo, who's on steel?

Post by Joachim Kettner »

A Rick Nelson song done by the drummer of the Who, from his solo album "Two Sides Of The Moon".
Lovely song. Who played steel?

Yes, he is mentioned in the credits in Wikipedia, but not explicitly for playing steel.

That would be me...guilty as charged. I did the Fender Rhodes part, as well. Haven't heard that cut since then.
Sorry... good thing it was almost 40 years ago.

btw, Keith didn't play the drums on the cut... it's Mickey McGee, who's played with Linda Ronstadt, Juice Newton, and the Burrito Bros., among others. Mickey also plays steel and is on the Forum.

Keith stretched on the control room floor in front of the console, and napped while we cut the track.

Skip,

I haven't heard you on steel for several decades now so it was good to hear you again. I think the last time I saw you I had been called in to fix a steel track for someone and you were on that session.

...... a technique employed with great success by some of my favorite producers.

Yes, Skip it was keys. I don't understand why being a great steel player, you took sessions mostly on keys, is that due to getting more calls for keys?

I did get an invite from Mike Perlowin but I live on the central coast now and it was too far, next year for sure. Maybe Rick will attend as well, it would be great to see you guys again.

Best

Yeah, Kirk...that's basically it.
You know how it was...in the '70's there was tons of places for a steel player to work, and in the Urban Cowboy days there was even more work to be had.
When I started playing with Dwight I was just hired as a piano/organ player, and we were using JayDee, Tom Brumley, Al Perkins, Ed Black, Gary Morse, etc...so who needed me on steel?
So, for those years I mainly concentrated on keys, and honestly, there was way more work for a keyboard player than a steel player.
I ws lucky enough to do the double with Dwight the last couple years I played with him, and nowadays I do a few steel sessions a month, but it's still mostly keys that are paying the bills.
Hey, work is work...
Hope all's well with you & hope to see you at the next Perljam.

Skip,

Thanks for clearing that up. I figured as much because I knew you as a steeler and then I started showing up on sessions and lo and behold, there you are on a B3 or something.

You mentioned Ed Black. A great pal and we lost him way too early about 93 or 94. A lot of folks don't know that Ed did fantastic leather work and was a trick roper as well.

Here is a shot of Ed ca. 1987 on the Rancheros Visitadores Trail Ride.
