having a problem on my teacher's site
I hope you can help me with this problem on teachers.net. I use Internet Explorer 8 and Windows XP. The problem is that in order to view the posts, I have to click on "Tools" and then "Compatiability View" on the toolbar. I am sent a dialog box saying that "You are viewing tnet in the
compatiablility view mode."- or a message like that. How can I view the posts without doing this, and what could be causing the problem?
thanks, Ron

Out of curiosity, how do you get IE 9 to work on XP? According to Microsoft, it works only on Vista and Windows 7. I've wanted to upgrade to IE9 on my XP computer, but can't. From Microsoft (I added the coloring):
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I think you may actually be running IE8 if you have XP.Internet Explorer 9 system requirements

Re: having a problem on my teacher's site
The solution was simple for me. I used Firefox to view that website and it displayed properly, without any compatibility notices.Ron Victoria wrote:I hope you can help me with this problem on teachers.net. Re: having a problem on my teacher's site
IE is such a lame browser that it doesn't render code the way other browsers do, and web developers have always had to write special IE-compliant code. So, using IE 9 if you encounter a page that was written for IE 8 it might not display properly. Hence the compatibility mode so you can see what the page would look like in IE 8, or 7, or....Wiz Feinberg wrote: When will people learn that there are better browsers then Internet Exploder?
BTW, I've seen TV ads recently for IE. M$ must be worried.

Dang. I was hoping you found a way to use IE9 with XP.
Yup. Internet Exploder SUCKS big time. I only use it to test website code.

I think I have a solution for you Richard. I'm even considering it myself.Richard Sinkler wrote:Dang. I was hoping you found a way to use IE9 with XP.

If you have any version of Windows 7 you are entitled to a less expensive "Anytime Upgrade" to a higher version. NewEgg currently has the Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Professional for about $75, with free shipping. People running Home Premium can upgrade to Pro with nothing more than a license code that you buy in this Anytime Upgrade. Once the key is validated, files are downloaded and your H.P. version becomes Pro, or Ultimate.
I mention this because if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can run a free, licensed copy of XP inside a virtual machine window. This means you can do your design work in either OS, and switch to the other OS to use its version of IE. Since XP runs in a window, you can just click on it to see your changes in its IE 8.
XP is limited to IE 8. Win 7 currently has IE 9. Win 8 will have IE 10.
