Guitar legend Jack Pruitt Sr. passes.

Post by Johnny Cox »

Legendary gutarist Jack Pruitt has passed away. Jack spent many years playing with Marty Robbins. He was also married to Opry star Jeannie Pruitt. I knew his as the father of school mates and neighbors during elementary and Jr. High School. I do not know any details at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this good man.

One of the highlights of my career was when I was around 15 yrs old and just getting started on lead guitar. The band I was in did a show with Marty's son Ronny. Marty had passed just a few years prior and Ronny was using Marty's band. I got to meet Jack. He was such a nice man and he showed me how to play the intro of "El Paso". I'll never forget that. Rest in peace my friend.

I was told a funny story about him yesterday, by one of his many friends. The friend said he asked Jack how he lasted so long with Marty. He said Jack told him "when Marty is in the front of the bus, I'm in the back; when Marty is in the back of the bus I'm in the front".

I remember at a Marty Show years ago, Marty introduce the band members and got to the guitar player as Jack Fong, which got a little laughter because of his Asian-looking eyes. He was a fine player.

Jack told me, "My nickname--I guess this is about as right as I can come up with. Between Louie Dunn and Marty--I think my little bandy-legged, bony legs reminded them of a chicken. And then I kind of have the Oriental eyes and cheeks, so they hung the bandy-legged chicken and the Oriental wong, so that's where it come out with Bandy Wong. Most all of the band members always called me Bandy. Some people still do. So I answer to Bandy as quick or quicker than I would Jack."

I have heard nothing about the cause of Jack's death, only that he died. Does anyone know? Did anyone attend his funeral?
