WSM DJ Charlie Douglas Passed Away 11/24/2011

Post by Mike Jones »

Condolences go out to the family and friends of longtime air personality and member of the COUNTRY MUSIC DJ HALL OF FAME, CHARLIE DOUGLAS, who passed away on THANKSGIVING DAY (11/24).
DOUGLAS was inducted into the HALL in 1994, and began his career in 1953 at KLIC-A/MONROE, LA. He became the first PD at KOCY-A/OKLAHOMA CITY in 1956 and later worked in ASHEVILLE, NC, NEW ORLEANS and NASHVILLE, where he spent many years at GAYLORD Country WSM-A. He retired from radio in 1995 to devote time to running CDX (COMPACT DISC EXPRESS), with his partner PAUL LOVELACE.
A memorial service is planned for DECEMBER 3rd, but details have not been announced yet.

If it wasn't for Charlie Douglas at WWL and Bill Mack at WBAP I probably would have fallen asleep at the wheel on a late night road trip and smashed up and been killed. You guys saved my life and I'm sure a bunch of lives of pickers, grinners, and truckers driving the graveyard shift. Charlie made it sound like he was sitting right next to you drinking coffee and keeping you alert while on the road. "Charlie Douglas here for the Union 76 Truck Stop in Slidell, Louisiana". I can still hear him saying that. Like the old Ed Bruce song says, ".....another piece of Americas'lost". RIP Charlie.

Some of my fondest childhood memories include traveling with my family to visit relatives on holidays and listening to Charlie Douglas on WWL. He was fantastic, and he will be missed.
