Quartet Performance at Baltimore's 2640

Post by Susan Alcorn (deceased) »

Two weeks ago I did a performance at Baltimore's 2640 with some of Baltimore's finest anf most creative musicians. Lafayette Gilchrist on piano is an internationally renowned jazz pianist. Trumpeter Dave Ballou, chair of the jazz studies program at Towson university, has performed and recorded with a who's who list of jazz and classical musicians. John Berndt, on clarinet has been sort of the enfant terrible and prime motivator of Baltimore's experimental music scene. And me, well they let me play along. There are three video recordings from that night.

This first video of our quartet, was taken by someone I don't know:

The next one, of the same performance has, to my ears, better sound, but the video leaves a little bit to be desired. My husband, who took this footage (as well as the photographs in the video), left the camera on me, and walked away (no coment), so you will see a lot more pedal steel than you may want to:

There are some nice moments with just Lafayette and myself that I enjoy. It's free improvisation, but definitely not "jazz" - if anything, the tonalities and melodic lines tend to be more reminiscent of 20th century classical music.

Before the quartet performance, Dave Ballou and I did a duet - the same choppy video, but a pleasant sound:

For all three of these, I think listening with nice speakers will make it a more meaningful experience.

I hope you enjoy the music.

Nice, Susan!
I prefer the duo clip - more intimate, more balanced to my ears. (I never did care much for clarinet, and some of the playing in the quartet reminds me of why. Just my opinion; your playing is superb.)
