John Coop Has Passed Away

JOHN COOP has passed away as of August 18. I don't know a lot about the details, I spoke briefly with a family member, John has been suffering for some time with several medical issues, and I guess he could not hold on any longer. I will try to remember John for the good things he has done, and the help he is given us for many years. I hope he is in a better place now.

I used him several times for parts. He did have a pride in what he was doing and managed his business well until his fortunes changed. Very sad news. RIP

This is very sad news. John kindly sent over to England, 2 Sho-Bud fret boards, a white and a black (metal ones), as a donation to help my friend Dave Langdon, who was ressurecting my Sho-Bud S-12 which was toasted in a house fire a few years ago. R.I.P.John.

i know there were a few "issues " - i bought parts from him a few times & things went without a hitch

Although we had our difficulties, I realize that health issues as severe as John's would affect anyone's business. My condolences to the family.

Never met John but I can see and appreciate the quality of his work in my "Al Marcus Sho-Bud." RIP to John and Al...there is a LOT of great music and craft in this guitar.

Our community has lost a craftsman, a restorer and someone who deeply loved the instrument. Those lucky enough to have a "Cooped" Sho-Bud have yet another reason to treasure the dedication and work of this man. By his passing we are all diminished.

To his family and friends (on the forum and elsewhere) I send my most sincere condolences.

RIP and thank you, John Coop.

I was playing, rather rarely here, on the 18th, using parts on my Bud I got from John. Sort of poetic that, because I did think of him at that time.

I'd been thinking I needed a few more, but had been procrastinating. Guess not now.

My appreciation for John taking proper care of me even at this long distance,
and needing a replacement of a part to fit a different design of LKR than we though originally... well he just sent it no charge, wanted to make me get what I needed.

He will be missed.

Sorry to hear about John, and unfortunately i guess ive lost my ldg also. He had it for over three years, and when he changed his number and wouldnt answer my emails i figured it was gone. But i hate he died. I hope he is in a better place. I wouldnt have any idea that i could get my guitar back, in any form.

This is sad what's happening to these guys. I do not like to speak bad of the people that have passed on. In fact, I never knew John was like this. The dealings I had with him were good. But apparently it's like a Jeckyl & Hyde scernario.

I am sure that his estate probably hasn't settled yet.

If it were me I'd pursue this by any means. Maybe if you can get a copy of his obit from the local hometown newspaper and sadly contact his immediate family members and explain your circumstance.

There are probably some of his members that just don't know where the guitars go and might want to help.

You won't know until you try.

It's just sad that it has come to this.

I really feel for these people that have lost their steels.

Yeah i dont like talking about it , esp under these circumstances, but i guess i could try. It was a slightly faded ldg triple raise double lower with one of gary prestons embroidered pads.

My LDG is over there, too. It was a bad situation and maybe it's best I not go into details given Coop's passing. I would like to get it back, though.

In a chance someone (family) may be collecting his mail, I would attempt a letter sent explaining the situation and how this encompasses more than just some parts that a couple guys didn't get before John passed away. Aside from that, I think one would have to go through the legal process if & when his "will" or his wishes for his estate to settle.
These things take time and we don't know John's legal, financial or other obligations involved in his personal financing & estate, but it's going on four months since he passed.
I guess if someone had the time, it may be worth the fly/drive to see what info may be obtained. Neighbors would be a good place to start.

everyone needs to read this. apparently john was having people break into his house and carry stuff off before he even passed. last time i spoke with him, he had 19 steel guitars, the son said he recovered three. and one of those was john's he thought. i'm sorry to convey this news, but the odds are just as great for mine being gone as anyone elses. his son has not contacted my attorney for an identification as of yet. i lost a cooped ldg , plus my money. and we lost john. i do have my serial number, and will file a police report for a stolen steel guitar if the id doesnt match up. what did i learn? if i cant drive there, and the turn around times are measured in months or years instead of a few weeks, then its not going there. period. johns house is empty, and has been broken into apparently. i'm sorry guys. if youve lost your steel like me, its time to move on.

whenever i spoke with john , he was always the kindest man. he would do all this fancy stuff to your guitar if you wanted, but he always held the old masters in the highest regard. he would say they didn't have all the extra stuff, and we still cant do what they could. i wish i could have met him in person.
