Bubba was a San Antonio legend and one of the good guys. I was proud I got to play some gigs with him. For many years he had the great Denny Mathis playing steel in his band. On the rare occasion Denny couldn't make a gig I was so honored that Bubba would ask me to play.
RIP my friend.....

I filled in for Bubba at the Melody Ranch for 4 nights in Nov of 1962 so he could go to the DJ Convention in Nashville to promote his new 45 at the time. I had gotten married two days before and haven't heard the last of it yet. I used to sit in a lot with the band and Leon Payne appeared there each Wed night as I recall.
Sorry to hear of Bubba's passing. He always treated me good as did the rest of the band. Tiny was playing a four neck Wright custom with him at that time. The next time I ran into Tiny was in Colorado Springs in 1965 at the Las Vegas Club.
RIP Bubba.
George

Jim Cleckler told me about it last night. A San Antonio legend has passed. RIP, Bubba.
Happier thoughts, that picture from the Farmer's Daughter, with Denny, Shoji, and Bobby Barker is classic!!!

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

When I was stationed at Brooks AFB in 1964 I had the pleasure of filling in with Bubba's band at a club just south of the loop. Can't remember the name of the club but we used to meet after hours at Capn Ahab's there on the corner. I really enjoyed the gig and the guys all treated me well.

Bubba's music will be missed. I never got to play with Bubba but I was fortunate enough to study under Denny Mathis for 3 years, who's siting behind that MSA D-12. What a great steel player! I went and visited Denny and Don over at Del View Music last year and took a couple of lesson from Denny to get my feet wet again after not playing for 20 years.
