Tommy Crain (CDB) has passed away...........

Post by Jerry Hayes »

Tommy Crain who was co/lead guitarist with the Charlie Daniels Band passed away in his sleep a night or two ago. Don't have all the details yet but I'll try to get more info.

Tommy was on all of the big hits that Charlie had and was a master of the southern rock style of guitar. He and Charlie used to play some very nice twin leads. He'd left the band some years ago but I'd never heard the reasoning for that move....RIP Tommy Crain.......JH in Va.
Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

Sorry to hear of this.
Heard him several times live, and copped alot of licks from him in my early days... Funky Junky comes to mind, Trudy, Cabio Diablo, etc...
I helped him push his Impala out of the mud after a CDB show at Kean College in NJ... late 70's-ish.
RIP

Here's how I remember him looking:

Tommy and I went to different schools together . . . literally. He went to Hillsboro and I went to Overton and we both played lead guitar with bands in Nashville called The Shadows. Our band became more successful, opening shows for large national acts in the mid 60s. In the guitar player contest, though . . . I LOSE. :)

So sorry to hear. Tom was a year younger than me. It's a sobering reminder of one's mortality. RIP, Tommy Crain.

Saw Tommy many times including my first concert in New Haven in 79. He really took CDB to new heights and the band couldnt match his work in later years. Take a listen to Birmingham Blues, Billy the kid, whiskey, funky junkie..all great..just incredible guitar work..RIP Tommy..

TC used to be married to the heir of the Martha White fortune. I got to visit with him a few times, a fun guy who knew his way around a guitar.
