IMO, Jay Dee has always been a heck of a nice guy and old friend from way back. He was no stranger to success when I first met him, as evidenced when he was much younger. I'll always be indebted to Jay Dee for his help and letting me watch up close to see just how the psg should be played, IMO. That was the first time I heard the term "touch" when referring to picking the psg. I am proud to be his friend.

I know Jay Dee uses 2 Evans amps. I know he's got a couple things in his rack...I wanna say an older Yamaha (maybe Ibanez?) delay/chorus. What else I'm not sure.

I also remember watching his teaching video and he mentions something about wiring his speakers out a phase to get that cool sound he gets.

Just to clarify, I think Micky Adams' video refers to the studio version solo. It's much the same in spirit, but also uses different positions than this live one. Even the descending run on the V chord that seems to define the solo is in a different place.

I've spent some time on this solo tonight, and it's a gold mine of interesting ideas if you take it 4 bars at a time. The sheer speed and cleanliness of it is so blinding, it's easy to miss the many nuances that lie inside.

Cool info on Jay Dee's setup, he's always had a very unique sound. Thanks.

Jay Dee has 18.5 Tonealigners i his p/p's and uses two Evans amps for live work, with the speakers out of phase to each other, and goes through an old SPX90 and E1005 analog delay, with reverb from the amps. I believe he generally prefers to record with a single Session 400 LTD or direct if he has to, and not always with the rack.

However all of that becomes relatively meaningless when you see him sit at an unfamiliar p/p Emmons, through a different amp, as he did last Saturday at Jim Palenscar's shop, and still pull his unique tone out of it.

Conclusion: That tone comes from his hands, and head.

thanks everyone..definitely one of the great unique players. you always know it's him. from international submarine band and his stint with buck, always a favorite.

people used to tell me when arriving at a club where i was playing, 'i knew it was you when i heard that sound coming down the street'!....but i'm not sure that meant it was a 'good' sound.

it's not often that i set the cursor at a certain spot on a you tube vid and keep pushing the button to hear it over and over, laughing with glee each time.

You have a big job ahead of you on this solo, The biggest part of J.D.s playing is his Soul, and he has a truck load of it, he is one of a kind, tone, ideas, no one else sounds like him,

and he has pretty hair!!!, ummmm, might be jealous of his playing and hair....and have the up most respect for him as a Person, and player... I need to quit!, this leg humping tires me out!

Richard Durrer, thanks for the link, I hadn't thought of checking out the venerable Rebel site for that.
David Wright, geez, I always thought your hairdo was pretty snazzy. When I go to the barber, I ask him to make me look just like David Wright.

Make you a deal: I'll start working on this solo, and you start working on growing a head of hair like Jay Dee's, and we'll see who gets there first.
Bearing in mind, the world is scheduled to end in 2012.

Nice one, John!

I'm just bumping this to the top just in case someone out there has yet to hear it. JayDee Maness is a National Treasure and here he is doing what he does better than anyone else on the Planet!

Over the years I've become more and more immersed in music that's anything but 'country', but this was a timely reminder of what used to send shivers down my spine when I was first exposed to the pedal steel guitar. Funnily enough, that was JayDee too - on that 'Suite Steel' album.

I'm still getting those shivers! Thanks, JayDee!

That is some fantastic playing for sure. Jay Dee is a favorite of mine at the Texas steel show. The last two times I have seen him play he was playing an MSA Studio Pro which he made sound good to my ears. I met him in the hallway aand he was very courteous. Great picker and great individual as well.
