Don't Come Home a Drinking...

Chris,
I'm sure either of these two would make Laretta proud and be fine for your female vocalist.

Joe Barcus, fellow forumite has it on his site@
pedalsteelintros&tips.com. Click on the archives aand he has it there. I have learned Weldon Myrick's intro to Connie Smith's'"I Never Once Stopped Loving You". Joe's an old slow talking West Virginia man,but he explains it very well.

Jim Loessburg has this intro "all talked out" on his "25 intros, solos, and turnarounds" instructional CD. I've never heard better "talk tapes" than loessburg's tapes. I got it through the forum.

I slowed the intro down to 1/4 speed to study the detail, and here's what I believe Hal played pretty much exactly in the first part--the chimy-sounding part, with strings ringing throughout:

Chris, get yourself this Hal Rugg course (endorsed by himself) teaching you Hal's "Loretta Lynn Medley", it's awesome! The Medley starts out with an instrumental version of "Don't Come Home A Drinkin'" which equals the original recording.

I'm doing a "Loretta" show right now. I found I wasn't able to get it all in with four bars. Then listening close to Hal's original version, it has five bars. Not counting pick up notes.
