That is the sound of country and of steel that is burned into my brain and speakes to me of times when there was real country music and the steel was leading the way.
Thanks for posting and thanks for the memories.
There may be some as good as Papa John, but very few any better in tailoring the steel to fit the song. Papa John's playing was always with great taste, never overpowered the singer or the song, only added and complimented the song and the singer. This was in the day when steel players were pros. The song would have been a good song without the steel, but with Papa John on the steel, it was a GREAT song.
Mr. Hughey was one of the best and so was Conway. If by chance someone asks you to define country music....show them this and other Conway Twitty videos/songs. If they then still do not understand....well, there is just no cure for cardboard ears. $:\$
These two greats may have passed on, but their music will live forever somewhere.

Wally and Terry : First off, Terry , thanks a million for sharing this great Conway Song with us; And naturally, PaPa John made it such a fine number to please any C/W Lover's ears. I went to one of Conway's Fair dates several years ago; during his prime time of presenting many of his number one hits. The thing I loved the most [ Besides PaPa John's playing ] was conway being a man of few words. One song after the other, no ab-libbing in between. Told the audience that he came to sing, not talk.. And that's what he did..I agree with all you quoted, Wally..Thanks..Bernie

THIS IS...imho, one of the greatest, most soulful and tasteful intros ever! Complicated, not really, but played with so much feeling and emotion and executed beautifully by John. Some of John's best work can also be heard on Ronnie Milsaps early LP's, especially the ballads. Ck out Milsaps, "Where Love Goes When It Dies" from an early RCA lp, great Hughey on that one. John will always be one of my top heroes Great Player, Great Person!
