Sleepwalk

Post by Don Sulesky »

Thanks for posting the article.
One of my fondest memories was seeing them live in person in 1960 play that song on stage among others such as Caravan. From that day all I wanted was to play steel guitar but it did not materialize for me until the early 70's.
And yes it was Santo on steel, not Johnny. I also talked to them for about 1/2 hour outside after their performance. What a thrill!!!!

Kevin, releases subsequent to the single are in C# (Probably a mastering fault)
BUT if you watch the video or listen to the sound clip you'll see that the tune was ORIGINALLY played in C.

The url of the video and the soundclip are given in the
first paragraph of page 22 above, but to save you typing them in just click the following links :-

Over 300 views and just 2 replies ?
Less than 1% response !! I should never consider politics.

The one and only time I posted a soundclip on the Forum I got thousands of views and only one response. The implication is that it was so bad that most people avoided commenting.

Nice work Basil, thank you. I've always been a slob and played it in A6...close, but I always knew something was amiss. That video really answered a lot of questions about this elusive tune.

Basil,

I practiced with your version yesterday and signed on to "note" the "mistake" today! I also suspected you did it deliberately since the rest of the piece seems faultless.

I've been using A6 for Sleepwalk, mainly because I don't want to re-tune during a set. We also play Slave Girl and Teardrop. Teardrop probably uses C#m7 also. Slave Girl works best with A6 for me.

What would be the 7th string tuning? Obviously, Santo used an E for the 8th string.

But I notice that if the 7th and 8th strings are tuned to A and F# (from the A6 tuning), the C and A bass notes are available on the third fret during the intro.

I like the 'feel' of the C#m7 tuning you list, too.

Do you use offsets for your tuning, similar to the Peterson offsets John Norris has posted? What would be the right offsets for the minor 3rd and Dom 7th notes?

Regards,

Have you compared it with this (from another thread) ?

Personally, I'm not keen on the Ventures's re-interpretation.

Alan,

I agree with you.

The Ventures clip is from a history/tribute/performance video made in the 80's featuring guest artists like Peter Frampton, David Johansen, Phil Collins, Robby Kreiger, Josie Cotton, Rick Derringer, etc. All intermixed with interviews with the aforementioned artists and others (Joey Ramone, et al) talking about the Ventures' influence. I got my copy through the Ventures fan club.

Well, I'm still practicing...I really butchered this tune last weekend. The only change I made (that I know of) was changing the height of the steel just slightly.

Basil, I'm still interested in your feedback!

OK Bruce, sorry about not responding sooner, kinda busy lately.
You ask "What would be the 7th string tuning? Obviously, Santo used an E for the 8th string.
"
Well the 7th string would be B and the eighth an E, and the sixth string alternating between D and C# depending on the structure of the tune.

As for "Offsets" re tuning, I tune "Straight up".
Bar pressure, Parallax and temperature can alter the pitch more than some of the offsets, so I personally think that the ear and hand correct whatever is PERCEIVED to be out.
Of course If I could play REALLY in tune, most people WOULDN'T know it was me !!

Did all that wonderful Welsh water from the Elan dam get polluted with the flooding ? (My grandfather worked on the Elan dam project.)
