He was a stylist with an unmistakable sound. Something you don't hear much these days. Anyone who chicken picks on E9 owes a bunch of licks to this guy whether they know it or not. R.I.P.

I am so saddened to hear about Weldon. He is without a doubt one of my steel guitar heroes. The many times I got to see and hear him play as I would sit on the side of the stage at the Opry, is priceless. He had a heart of gold and a million dollar smile. His tone and style was unmistakable. He will be missed immensely.

This is very sad news to hear tonight.

Weldon was a gentle and humble person, and a force of nature on the steel guitar.

He taught me a lot, simply by example. In 1989, he was gracious enough to come in and play steel on the first album I ever produced, for an artist named Jann Browne. Weldon played on a Harlan Howard shuffle called "The One You slipped Around With" and flawlessly aced his part live on the tracking session, which is no surprise to any members of this forum.

Afterwards, when he signed the union time card, he wrote "thank you" right after his signature. I've never seen anyone do that since then. It blew this rookie away. He was a god to me.

My condolences to his entire family. Weldon was one of a kind and he will be very greatly missed.

respectfully,

Just read this news this morning. Weldon was a massive influence on me, especially his work on the Area Code albums when I first took up the instrument. He was such a tremendous player. Rest In Peace Mr Weldon, and my prayers and thoughts are with your family.

My condolences to the family. Weldon was a most tasteful player who to me epitomized class and when not to play.

Sad that another of my hero's are gone.

Its been a bad morning for me, I read about Weldon, and about Bobby Bowman's prognosis. Also one of our steel guitar club members has been tentatively diagnosed with brain Melanoma.

Weldon Myrick provided it all. . . style, tone, smoothness, technique, endless creativity and a gentle kindness. The only thing that appeared to be missing was ego. Our family offers prayers to comfort the family of this very nice gentleman.

Here's link to one of my favorite Weldon masterpieces:

This is such sad news. I've listen to Weldon probably more than any steel player in the business due to him being so prominent in the 70's on the radio when I was in high school and listening to country radio all the time, and of course he was Mr. Steel Guitar for the Opry staff band when it was still a country show. RIP my friend!

One of my heroes too. As a twenty-something kid new to town in the early 80s he eased the nervousness of my playing the Opry by being just as encouraging and gracious as could be, even as he played so incredibly that you knew you'd never reach that level.

I was able to spend a few hours talking with him a few months ago and while he was clearly a bit frail he was the same soft-spoken, self-effacing guy he'd always been, with the same twinkle in his eye and same sense that he just felt grateful to be part of playing music for a living.

One of the greats. Rest in peace...

Weldon!

Post by Stan Knowles NC »

I knew Weldon for many years...but he knew me as a
country broadcaster (Country Crossroads radio show
which co-starred Jerry Clower and Bill Mack - syndi-
cated weekly on 1,500 radio stations around the world.)

And then...one night backstage at the Opry...as I passed him on stage and spoke to him...he said, "I didn't know that you were a songwriter!" I said, "Yes!" And he replied..."I just played steel on the song you and O.B. McClinton wrote called 'American Soul'...and we recorded it for Epic Records just last week!"

To me...he was ALWAYS..the quiet, unassuming gentleman!
And...he was nice to everybody. But Weldon was the
consummate steel guitar player. He was "MR. SMOOTH!"

I will miss him!
