Here's a quote from Jim Keltner in the American Masters tribute to Lennon:
"Like I said before, he always told me that Ringo was his favorite drummer. We got that straight in front. But he knew--I would ask him constantly about Ringo, this and that, "did you tell Ringo to do this or that on this song?", or whatever--he would sometimes answer me, but generally he would be very cryptic kind of little answer, like "let's move on", 'cause he really didn't want to go into it much, but he knew what a great effect Ringo's playing had on me and the whole world."
Anyway, John probably did say that crack about Ringo, but he was a joker.
A little off-topic, but Keltner also described how he was jamming with McCartney, who was on Ringo's drums after Ringo left early. Paul dropped a stick and reached over in Jim's bag and grabbed a mallet which he turned over and it went right through the head. Jim freaked, saying, "Wow, you broke the Ed Sullivan head!" Paul said, "don't worry, I'll buy him another." Jim changed it and kept the head, which he still has. The same calfskin head that was originally on the drum.
