I believe any song can be great if it is played well enough. Like Jody said, take a listen to Buddy Charlton and Leon on Steel Guitar Rag, I bet none of us would mind playing it if we could do it like that. If you don't like playing a certain song which is usually one that the public requests just learn to play it a lot better with some new arrangement and it will be good as new. I bet we all would enjoy any song that has been mentioned in this thread if Buddy was playing a great tasteful arrangement of it.
I think the songs we don't like to play are the ones we are sick of our arrangement on.
I have that problem with a lot of songs but I think its my fault and not that of the song. (I didn't get much sleep last night, please forgive me)

The thing I like about SGR is the minor 3rd is a little sharp, like a minor 3rd & 1/3. That's the real deal blues interval that bottle neck players came up with back in the beginning of time. Some guys probable don't hear it and therefore don't play it, but I think that is one of the things that makes that song so special.
to take a vote AWAY from SGR, just listen to the one Lloyd did. Bee-u-ti-ful!
I've worked it up, and I really like it. But I'd never try to do it like Leon.
For me, the tune I dislike most is San Antonio Rose, but, again, that comes from being asked to play it by bands, who did NOT understand their ass from their elbow.
Nothing against SGR, it depends on how you do it. I really dig Jimmy Day´s and Buddy Charleton´s versions.
But here´s something - my band leader/singer just loaned me a CD with steel instrumentals hoping that I might like to do some of them. It contains Take Me Home Country Roads arranged as an SG instrumental. Now that one surely qualifies as the one I dislike most.
