I just downloaded and installed Tara. However, it will not play .ra file unless the Real player is installed. That is exactly what I am trying to avoid.
The Real codecs are still on my system.
It says so here in the FAQ: http://wwwpop.hypermart.net/plugin/faq.html#uninstallreal
I cannot load .ra files into winamp with the file selecotr dialog, since they are not a supported type. But I can drag and drop them into Winamp, where of course they do no play.

Earnest,
You can download RP8 from oldversion.com.
If you're using Tara, don't use WinAmp 3, use 2.81 instead. You can download it from the WinAmp site (link in upper right corner of main page: "Looking for WinAmp 2?").
Unlike UltraPlayer, WinAmp does require the files listed in the link you gave. But you can totally disable the RP executable. And you should disable everything in the RP preferences before you do.
If you run a personal firewall like Kerio or Zone Alarm, you can be certain Real is not dialing out by denying it outbound permission.
Before installing RP8, be sure to delete all remnants of the RealOne/Jukebox installation.

OK. real8.exe is downloading
Do you mean go thru the registry again and manually delete each reference to RealXxx? I spent an hour doing that yesterday, but then I undid it all when I reinstalled Real Player. I have uninstalled Real Player again but there are still hundreds of references to it in the registry. Before installing RP8, be sure to delete all remnants of the RealOne/Jukebox installation.

Earnest,
There are some registry editing tools that can make things faster if you choose that route.
Finally, if none of these things work for you, I'd suspect ME as the culprit. I've gotten WinAmp and UP to work on everything else but never tried it on ME.
Are we having fun yet?
I think it's your call. Certainly that would be the safest but it should work just by getting rid of the program remnants. If the new install doesn't work there's always the chance that it was caused by something left over from RealOne. The old cost/benefit thing may come into play here.Do you mean go thru the registry again and manually delete each reference to RealXxx?
