A word of caution. I recently replaced a pot that was seized up in a Goodrich pedal. I replaced the pot with a new one and in a few minutes the new one seized. The problem was that the pulley must have some clearance from the pot face! I removed the pot, turned it a few times to free it up and reinstalled it with some clearance. It then worked fine. If it is too close, it will pull the shaft outward and bind.

I've been using my Goodrich L–120 for several years, with no problems. (knock on wood) Today I want out and bought another L–120, for a spare, since I play both PSG and NPSG. They both have Clearostat Pots, so; I guess time will tell, but; I have found the Canadian replacement, and have one on hand for the inevitable! [It has no Brand-Name on the casing, just letters and numbers]: RV4NAYSJ504C, 500K K02, P E C, MADE IN CANADA It also has Brass (Gold) Terminals and Threads & Washers. It's claimed to be really smoooth on the taper! I'm almost looking forward to trying it! Image Image

I agree with most all of the comments above. I personally offer a 1 year free pot replacement policy on any new pot pedal purchased from me.
In over 20 years of steel guitar retailing, I can count on 1 hand the number of pots I've had to replace under warranty. I've seen pots go in 3 months, but also last for 10 years.
The Goodrich Company have always replaced any faulty pots...no questions asked!
Happy Steeling!

Al and John:

That's good news! There was some discussion awhile back here about the demise of the potentiometer for use in volume pedals and from that, I came to wonder if they were of dwindling availability, sort of like vacuum tubes were not too long ago. Volume pedals aren't only used for steel guitars, guitarists use them as well and Ernie Ball still sells quite a few--I see them in catalogs all the time.

When I first started playing steel, the standard was the Allen Bradley and it was pretty much that or nothing. With their demise, the replacement pots were somewhat less reliable. Keep us informed of any new high-value pots and what to avoid.

Thanks! --JR

I just bought a new volume pedal from Emmons Guitar Co. The pot was bad. The volume didn't come on with a taper but with a "burst" of speed. I put a Ohmite CA5041 pot in it. Works great, but I don't know how long it will last. Ron Jr. said he would send me another pot but it wouldn't do any good since everyone he had has the same problem. They buy their pots from George Lewis just like we do.
